Scam: "AA Fly Away promotion" hook for "club" presentation

I received a card from AA today saying "happy holidays" "Fly Away Promotion" It has AA on the front and back saying that i was selected for 2 round trip airfares and two night hotel stay.

Even though it looks "AA" official I am skeptical. Anyone else get this and call the 888 number? What is the catch?

Bettman sucks!

From the Orange Country Register article:

The Better Business Bureau noted on its website that there has been a "pattern of complaints" against Sea to Ski, in part over the "lack of fulfillment of offers of free prizes promised to presentation attendees." In response, the company blamed the independent distributors and said it was not responsible for any prize offers, according to the Better Business Bureau.

The postcard promotion has been circulating around the country for more than a year. A spokesman for American Airlines, Matt Miller, said it picked up especially around the holidays last year. The airline's security team, he said, is "trying to put an end to it as soon as we can."

"In states where similar promotions have been offered, consumer complaints indicate that the offer is really a gimmick to get recipients to sign up for a pricey travel club or website subscription," the department warned.

Thank You fellow Flyertalkers!

I knew I could count on you for some insight.

One of my co-workers received this postcard yesterday, just as described in the OP but minus the "Happy Holidays". So it appears this scam is continuing.

To his credit, his bovine excrement detector was immediately triggered by the scammy appearance of the offer...

Dead giveaway: It doesn't say "FlyAAway". :D

The scam has been around for over a year and has highlighted several airlines, including AA, WN and DL. Popular scam!

I got one this week.

In the past, I've gotten them with a quasi-AA looking font but the airline title was "American Airways".

This time I noticed that it was "American Airlines". That made me at least pause for about a half a second before realizing that it was the same scam.
