Something happen to class-of-service bonus? (<500-mile flight)

Did something happen to class of service bonuses?

I saw this on my account from a recent segment which was booked in the "P" class:

Code:

AMERICAN AIRLINES 182 F LAX LAS                236        764        1,000
As EXP, shouldn't I get miles above and beyond the 1,000 minimum? Did something screw up?

Mark_T Dec 21, 2012 3:34 am

The minimum is 500, not 1,000

Yes, but PLT/EXP get 2x miles.

Microwave Dec 21, 2012 3:52 am

Assuming booked into F, A or P, this should have earned 1250 miles, not 1000.

Dave Noble Dec 21, 2012 4:01 am

The miles earned is correct

Base Miles is 236
Class of Service bonus of 50% is 118

Total 354

Since holding EP status,

Since 354 < 500 , min miles earning of 500 is applied

EP bonus of 100% 500

Total earning 1000

This will be displayed as 236 base plus 764 bonus

No The COS bonus is applied on the actual miles. after the COS bonus is applied, then if it is less than 500, then it is upped to 500

After the min miles applied, then the EP bonus is applied

The min miles application is not performed before COS calculation

Are you sure about that?

When the base + COS is still below 500 they use 500 I believe, they don't take base and round it up to 500 then apply COS.

premium fares f, p etc get eqp bonus 1.5 iirc no eqm/rdm extras....

As you will see, there is a Class of Service bonus for RDM and EQP.

You don't get it for EQM though.

Sounds like we have it not quite right on this other wiki page, too:

http://www.flyerguide.com/wiki/index...oints_%28AA%29

4. Calculate the number of RDM you will earn for each qualifying segment based on miles flown, booking class, and elite status. First calculate your base RDM at 1.0 RDM per mile flown, subject to the 500-mile minimum for elites only. Second, calculate any Class-of-Service Bonus RDM based on miles flown. Third, calculate any Elite Bonus RDM based on base RDM. Add the three figures to arrive at your Total RDM.
I suppose we've never analyzed an example where the miles flown were <500 for paid F.

I just hope that OP did not pay P class fare out of his own pocket for a 236 mile flight :D

I have noticed this too recently. I did a short BA flight in J and was credited with a total of 1,000 miles. I used to be awarded 1,250 for this. It has definitely changed at some point over the last few months, unless it is an error.

EQM: 500 (minimum for for elites)
RDM: 500+100% (elite bonus) +50% (1st class bonus)=1250
EQP: 500*1.5=750
MMM: 236

It does not work that way. I have done quite a few flights in 1st and busines class and know how it applies

Miles flown was 236
Class of service bonus is then applied . 50% of 236 is 118
Total miles earned is 236+118 = 354

If the passenger was a base member, 354 miles is that which would be applied to his account and this would be the end

In this case, however, the passenger holds status and so the the minimum mile earning rule will apply which will boost it to 500.

It is at this point that the 100% bonus for being EP is applied to the minimum miles which boosts it to 1000

It is not calculated by applying min miles and then adding class of service

If travelling on very short flights , there is no mileage earning benefit for 1st or business class

I have taken quite a few flights < 500 miles in paid premium fares and this is not a recent change; it was working this way for a long time

Where the flight is 334-499 miles in 1st or 401-499 miles or more in busines then the calculation is base plus COS will exceed 500 but the base miles for calculating Gold or higher status bonuses will be on the 500

e.g. 439 mile flight ( which is one I have done a lot in business )

Base 439
COS bonus for business 110

Earning for a regular member 549 . Back when normal members did get a min mile guarantee, the total earning for this would still be 549 since 549 > 500

For a Gold or higher member, the bonus for is applied on the base/min miles ( excluding any COS ). Miles flown 439, so bonus applied on min which is 500
Gold member then earns 125 bonus and Platinum earns 500

Total for gold would be 549+125 = 674
Total for Platinum would be 1049

This would have to be an error. Even if ( which I am sure it isnt ) was the case that the min miles were done on the base miles and then COS was credited, then it would only be 1125 for a business class flight
