Got bumped to EXP while being short of miles, points and segments

Received an email from AA this morning saying my Double EQMs and Points had posted, so I logged in to check. Status showed as EXP with <100K miles, points and <100 segments. Any ideas?

I just got the same email and my profile says EXP. My profile still shows my miles in the Mid 90K's.

Same email, no change in the point or mile totals, but I was already showing 119k miles and 126k points.

Looking at my mileage tracker spreadsheet, I see the bonus had been applied some time ago, so the email is quite old news and I had qualified EXP without the bonus, anyway.

Anyone else lucky enough to be the recipient of gifted status this year? My husband's Plat account was mysteriously upgraded to EXP some time in the past day or two, despite being 40k miles short of qualification. Like some of the posters in this thread, he spends $$$ on last-minute refundable fares for business travel, and traveled quite heavily the last quarter of the year. Lucky duck.

Sorry about the non-descriptive title. I was trying to determine if there was a promotion that I missed or something. It's my nature to want to know "why" and I can't figure it out. Thought the combined knowledge in this forum may have some ideas.

karolinatx, I moved your post from the thread you previously linked to this one, and closed the former. This way we can keep discussion in just one place.

I was a beneficiary of this "almost but..." promotion to EXP last year. Much speculation why promoted last year in another thread - happy promotees, some unhappy regular EXPs qualifying under normal rules. From my perspective, I did in fact increase my flying and spend with AA in 2012 to retain EXP (I was a rookie this year) in part a thanks, and in part, the benefit of EXP is way above PLT (at least for me). So, as a marketing strategy, it worked for me, and I encouraged two of my colleagues on my staff to fly AA more. As a result, they went from the white card to the silver card.

I will say congrats, and I hope you are not competing for the same upgrades I am....
