Arrow 2013 AAdvantage status year repurchase / buyback (consolidated)

Im going to fall short this year by 10k miles and would prefer not to do a mileage run. Next year I will be flying alot for work and would like to keep my status. Does AA offer me a chance to pay a fee to keep my plat status instead of dropping to gold?

Last year, they announced a buyback program in late Dec. There's no guarantee they'll do it again.

I agree on MR. Thats the safest guarantee. With almost half the year devoted to double EQM promotions, I am surprised everyone didn't qualify for Executive Platinum in the spring.

With a AATHX deqm running do a quick transcon from LAX and that should give you the required 10k miles. Even if this year AA offers a buy back program it will be much cheaper this way and you'll also earn ~15K RDMs.

Mileage Calculator has LAX-JFK at 9,880 with AATHX DEQM.

If you fly early next week, ITA has AA flights at $318.
$362 for the upcoming weekend.

LAX-BOS 12/15 @ $436 would net over 10,400 EQM's if OP needs 10,000miles. Be sure to register for AATHX first.

To put the other comments in context, last year's platinum buyback cost $619 or $769. You got the cheaper price if you had earned at least 40,000 EQM. Depending on how you value your time (and whether or not you consider time on an airplane to be wasted), the MR might be well worth it.

Don't forget any associated pluses or minuses involved with a mileage run...

1. Gas / Tolls / Parking at the airport. (negative)
2. Food purchased for flight each way if not flying in first (negative)
3. Time away from family (could be negative or positive)
4. Chance of meeting and spending time with another FTer on a mileage run (positive)
5. Flying in economy the entire day (negative especially if not in exit row)
6. Being scolded for "not performing a search" on this topic (negative)
7. RDMs that you would recieve instead of doing a buy-back (positive)
8. Are you going to buy Gogo for the day? (negative)
9. Ability to catch up on some work (positive)

In case anyone is interested, looks like AA released the buyback for 2013. Prices remain the same as last year. I might have to do this sadly.

Don't forget that doing a buyback goes on your permanent record. You're only allowed to do a buyback or challenge twice per 5 year period, so if you can earn your status the "legit" way with a MR you're preserving a potential buyback/challenge opportunity 4 years from now.

Actually, that's NOT in the published offer, which says

Am I eligible to renew my elite status?

If you are currently an AAdvantage Platinum or AAdvantage Gold member, and you have flown at least two elite qualifying segments during 2012, and did not participate in this offer last year, then you are eligible to renew your status.
