The first AA 787-8, N800AN, has been built; flight testing began 6 January 2015 with the article currently referred to as "BOE-817".

The initial 787-8 configuration is expected to be 28 J, 48 MCE and 150 MC.

Post 184 (sluggoaafa):

28 B/C, 48 MCE, 150 MC

...last word we had was the 787 is due on 'property' approximately 12/31. January will be tied to FAA. February getting a few more tweaks done. March will be first AA revenue flight.
(Post #186, JonNYC, has details for the 787-9.)

The All Things 787 Blog states American has 16 787-8s and 26 787-9s on order.

Post #157 states first passenger flights early 2015.

JonNYC depicts what the J cabin layout is likely here in post #260.

roadwarrior84 in post #260 shares some interior photos he found online, here.

To keep things in some semblance of organisation, I've consolidated all of the 2012 threads on the 787 delivery dates, orders or delays into this thread. For reference, here are the threads I found from years past, along with their dates:

. . . ● 14 Jan 2013: American changing jet orders with Boeing, Airbus
. . . ● 12 November 2011: AA 787 delivery schedule?
. . . ● 21 December 2010: AA 787 delivery dates at risk - again!
. . . ● 2 September 2010: American's 787's may fly JFK-LHR
. . . ● 21 February 2010: Boeing 787 Dreamliner: when realistic to fly on AA?
. . . ● 17 April 2009: 787 deliveries pushed back to 2013
. . . ● 15 October 2008: AA Orders 42 787 "Dreamliners" (+ 58 on options)

The livery looks so ugly in the CGI images. The planes are gray (and look much better) in person, not shiny chrome as they seem to be in the pictures.

Rumors? or FTers rationalized wishes?

Wouldn't an existing profitable route make more sense? (MIA-GIG?)

IIRC it was due to Boeing's severely delayed delivery schedule for the 789s AA had ordered -- for delivery starting in 2012.

I was talking about actual rumors (as in, from people in the know). If we want to discuss routes we wish they would fly, I think there's a separate thread for that.

The latest from AA...

American will take delivery of its first 787, which Boeing calls the Dreamliner, in November. Passenger flights begin flights early next year. In the next few months, dozens of American pilots will sit in the same simulator and learn the nuances of the controls before they can fly the real plane.

I'm really happy pilots will fly in a cosy simulator sitting dozens of pilots before they fly the real plane. Maybe they'll develop a little empathy for those flying coach?

(Yes, deliberately misread, but AA needs an editor, IMO.)

Naw, even dozens in the simulator will be less cramped than coach.
According to the Houston newspaper, it seems AA pilots are to begin simulator training soon (within weeks ?) in Fort Worth (flight training pilots already at work). Other rumors are flights to Middle East, following domestic training flights. I hope AA improves flights to Asia since oneworld is weak in this part of the world (CX is impossible for awards and JAL too expensive for paid flights and requires transit through NRT).

I have kind of come to the conclusion that only with time on my side are my AA miles truly remarkable.

If I want a direct international flight from Chicago in the front of the bus, it is going to be like 60k+ one way.

Boeing is hoping to deliver 11 787s a month and parts are arriving for the aircraft that are in positions 220, 221, and 222. So it appears that parts will be arriving for the first AA 787 within the next 6-7 weeks and construction should begin in about 2 months for the first 787.

All Things 787 website now list the first 10 AA 787-8s and the firing order for these planes. The tail numbers begin with N800AN and go to N809AN. AN was not available for all planes, as 801 is AC, 803 is AL, and 806 and 807 are AA. The line numbers of the AA aircraft now go to 336 (N809AN) and all will be built in Seattle. N800AN should be flying in September, as Boeing now is ramping up production to over 10 planes a month.

If the route is existing and profitable why would they retire the perfectly fine equipment and incur a huge new capital cost just to eke out a slightly larger profit?

I would think more likely the use of the 787 would be in expansion, adding more long and thin routes like those named (as was part of the design intent of the 787).
