Strangely however, zero fighter jets were scrambled on 9/11/01.

Yes, there were: Wikipedia Article

The two F-15 alert aircraft at Otis Air National Guard Base in Falmouth, Massachusetts were ordered to battle stations (seated in their aircraft, engines not yet started). At 8:46, just at the time the first tower was hit, Nash and Duffy were ordered to scramble (an order that begins with engine start-up, a process that takes about five minutes), and radar confirmed they were airborne by 8:53. By that time, however, the World Trade Center's North Tower had already been hit.

That's not true at all.

While the spokesperson can say this was a big nothing, I have never seen 3 people lock themselves in a bathroom on landing on AA 34, which I have been on dozens of times, or any other flight. So this was a little abnormal. And the crew felt it to be so, or we would not have seen fighter planes scrambled.

I've got to say if the pilots and FAMs deemed the situation unworthy of an emergency, I'd be pretty unhappy if the USAF sent a rocket up their pipes merely because of some weirdness - even if it is the tenth anniversary of Sep 11. Panic in and of itself kills.

That could be me - a few drinks in the AC prior to take off, a pre-departure drink, a few in flight - I might hit the restroom a few times on a 5+ hour transcon.

Same here! That's why I have a particular interest in this case...plus, there's just something about airline and movie theater seats....

+1 Which is why I always prefer an aisle seat so I don't have to crawl over anyone! Probably also why I don't sleep much even on TPAC.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148 Safari/6533.18.5)

It's more absurd security theater nonsense.

Yes, but as in the 9/11/01 scenario, even if the planes were dispatched properly, would Bush or someone else in "authority" have given the order to shoot down a plane with passengers on board? The two plane strikes of the WTC occurred only 17 minutes apart, after the first plane struck, even if the 2nd were shot down, it would have been over NYC (Manhattan).

If you listen to the NYTimes tapes you'll see that locating the planes was part of the problem with sending the fighters for the other two planes.

This did not happen according to sources other than Fox (it would be close to physically impossible for normal-sized adults), and the pilot did not even know about the scrambled jets. The crew felt the frequent bathroom-going to be no threat. Just another ninny scared of shadows causing jet fuel to be wasted.

I watched the Bush interview last night, and he stated that made the decision to do just that and was prepared to give that order to the ANG.
