Why AA move away from 3rd party website?

AA announced its flight won't be availabe on 3rd party website, such as priceline, hotwire, etc. Is it a wise move?

as a consumer, i don't like it..

As a consumer, you should like it. It helps to keep AA fares lower.

This is true. Doesn't AA (Or any airline from that matter) have to pay out some of the profits to put the fares on the sites such as Orbitz etc?

Southwest has never (as far as I know, *ever*) utilized 3rd party booking, atleast not on Orbitz-and I have not seen any anti-free market practices from them as of yet

It's a complicated issue between costs and control of distribution of which all parties have only their own corporate interests in mind. I have a hard time believing any of the parties involved are focused on the consumer.

There will probably be a compromise somewhere in the middle, but it will have nothing to do with what's best for the consumer, but will be what is acceptable to the corporations involved.

I thought priceline was playing nice with AA and not following the Expedia/Orbitz dispute, but I guess AA is kicking them off the friends list now, too.

Will this removal from 3rd party sites mean all those rewards programs won't be able to redeem tickets on AA?

The deeply seated page www.priceline.com advertises that priceline can sell you tickets on AA

Dunno why the OP mentioned "Priceline." AA and Priceline negotiated an agreement a few weeks ago that keeps AA tickets available on Priceline. Hotwire, OTOH, is the latest site where AA tickets will not be available unless/until an agreement is reached.

Unlike the OP, I'm happy when business attempts to eliminate excessive distribution expenses.

I don't know what the airlines pay per ticket to the 3rd party websites, but do know that hotels pay 20 to 25% of the total selling price.
