People - and firms - can see the same forecast and reasonably come to different conclusions. If, with a storm at the upper range of forecasted snowfall, UA had expereinced a JetBlue-style meltdown AA's pre-emptive action would had looked brilliant.

But of the flights that *did* depart from ORD, only 2% of AA's went on time. Yet even with UA's non-cancellations, they managed to get 65%. My question is-what is AA's issue with getting planes going? What skill or policy does UA have to get this done in a much more reasonable and fairer, and efficient fashion?

My source is not myself-it's flightstats.com. The article you cited, with respect, does not refute the flightstats.com result for 12/4-it talks about cancellations alltogether, and is not limited to specific airline numbers.

Sat on plane in RDU for 1.5 hr waiting for the deicing crew that was unprepared to say the least. Luckily flight out of lga was running behind also, so plenty of time to make my connection. RDU admirals club was a ghost town, love the new terminal.

This would be a great story for the USA Today in the Sky blog... UA definitely came out looking better on this one.

Sorry to hear that AA didn't take care of your needs. They couldn't have been better in changing mine, well, OK, they could have UPG'd me on ALL the flights that I got changed. But overall, just great. And, the EXP agent I talked with on Friday evening wanted me to reroute SFO-DFW instead of keeping my UPG'd SFO-ORD.

I think its a karma issue. Was supposed to fly into ORD to via Eagle to catch my flight back to ATL. When I spoke to them and explained that I had a new trip starting this afternoon back in ATL and would like to spend a couple of hours at home. They moved me to another airlines and sent me directly back to ATL.

Wow, that is strange....even throwing in eagle vs UAX carriers, UA performed much better than AA. What is up with the 1% on time? It has to be (IMHO) related to deicing methods/procedures, as I cannot fathom any other rational explanation for the huge difference. I know that UA called in much overtime on the ramp (early starts, holdovers, days off) and the ramp does the de-icing. Maybe AA saved more $$ by consolidating empty flights and not paying so much overtime, but the operational differences are staggering. Long term, such a cost cutting measure will have lingering effects on booking patterns if this is a M.O. vs a one timer.

I am doing LAX-ORD-ROC tonight. My goodness, only ORD is getting to ROC for AA. Should I try to ask to reroute through IAD/EWR/PHL and ask to get through another carrier to ROC?

It's odd walking past the UA monitors here at ORD and seeing every single flight on time. I walked over to the AC in the G terminal and AA has cancelled at least 50 flights. Good luck for anyone trying to get out of here today. I have some airport photos HERE if you want to see the snow on the ground.

Incidentally, I'm not flying, this week, but I am watching Flightstats. UA is crushing AA in on-time departure rates at ORD, LGA, BOS, LAX, and SFO.

Looks like more snow in ORD this weekend. I have STL-ORD-HNL Saturday morning. I'm not experienced with ORD weather delays. How bad does it have to be for flights to be canceled? 4 inches on Dec. 4th doesn't seem bad to me so Im a little nervous. Need these final miles!
