Booking RT vs OW on aa.com

Almost every domestic flight I book has a OW that is 1/2 RT. The only exception I have encountered are Hawaii flights. But certainly JFK/BDL/IAD/BOS to Florida, Chicago, and California are all 1/2 RT. I can't speak to DFW as an O/D though
