Exclamation URGENT: HELP! VOLCANO!! caused problems for tomorrows trip to GUA

Ok, I need ANYBODIES Help on what to possibly do.

My brother, his wife and two sister-in-laws (4 passengers) were planning to go from LGA to (GUA) La Aurora (Guatemala City) tomorrow on a 12:15 flight.

On the AA website it says:

Guatemala Travel Policy
Due to a volcanic eruption in Guatemala, American Airlines offers customers the convenience to change their plans. Customers ticketed to travel on AA flights to or from the areas listed may change flights as shown without penalty.

If you are traveling to or from: Guatemala City, Guatemala (GUA)
On the following dates: May 28 - June 1, 2010
And your ticket was issued no later than: May 28, 2010
You may begin travel as late as: June 7, 2010
Original ticketed inventory required? No

One ticketed change is allowed with no penalty. Passengers may elect to fly into or out of San Salvador (SAN). Tickets must be re-issued by June 1, 2010.

To change travel dates or for inquiries regarding flights to/from San Salvador, contact our Reservations personnel at 1-800-433-7300 within the United States or Canada. If you are calling from outside the United States or Canada, please check our Worldwide Reservations Numbers page for Reservations.
1) Does that mean it still needs to originate from LGA on AA metal or can it be from either JFK or EWR, and does it sill need be on AA metal (if not, what other metals can he fly on?).

2) They offered him a 6 am flight to miami, which would require me to wake up at 2:30, pick up up at 3:30, and get to LGA by 4:30. If it has to be done, it has to be done...but everyone would REALLLLY prefer to try to change this if possible. (Dont know if it can be changed to an EWR or JFK flight or if AA has contracts with other airlines?)

3) Also, does anyone know if there is a possibility of any sort of comps (or a comp room tonight by LGA), if so how should that be brought up, or is just not possible.

I panicked then, thinking the Icelandic one had flared up, but then noticed GUA.... Not a European destination I thought...

Hope all goes well, some of us have been caught up in serious delays with the one in Iceland.

I'm glad your relatives are getting out tomorrow.

I can't believe AA got the code wrong for San Salvador on its website:

Passengers may elect to fly into or out of San Salvador (SAN).
That should be SAL.

Depending on where someone wants to go in Guatemala, San Salvador is a (comparatively) reasonable five-hour trip from Guatemala City. No fun if GUA is your destination, of course.

Interesting... volcano also shutdown GUAYAQUIL's airport (GYE)

MIA-GYE today at 7:25pm was canceled due to volcanic activity in Guayaquil's Tungurahua

Looks like AA will have some birds down in GUA for a while. The rain from Agatha is reportedly turning the ash into cement.

I was going to suggest rerouting around that area with LAN or AeroMexicano, but seems you already found a solution!!! Good luck and safe travels-
