Flying American with NC Headphones
We are booked on a flight from MIA to BKK. With this in mind we have decided to buy the BOSE NC Headphones. I have just recently heard that passengers on Air Canada are not being allowed to use the over the ear type of NC headphones. They were told they could only use the "ear bud" type for safetly reasons. My concern is...we are paying $300 each for these headphones and will be really upset if not allowed to use them. Has anyone had any problems on American with these? Do you think the other airlines will follow Air Canada? No Business class seats available so three long flights in coach...we need to do everything we can for comfort.

Anyway, last two times I flew American business internationally, they were handing out Bose NC sets, (unfortunately they collected them back in again as well :-) so I hardly think you'll have a problem.

I flew AC on four legs earlier this year YYZ<->THZ and YYZ<->YQT and they never said anything to me. They have to come off during T/O & Landing which is a bummer because they often keep the IFE running even during landing.

I have the Sony NC over-the-ear ones. Never had anybody ask me to take them off though, besides landing of course. Guess when things get bumpy the big cans can be hurtful. During normal flight I cant imagine it would be a problem though.

I have a overhead headphone set that is wireless. They would not allow me using it. But my wife's wired NC set is fine.

You should be fine.
Don't forget you can earn AA miles when purchasing Bose headphones.

I have used them many times on AA flights. No one has ever said anything. AA hands them out on many flights. I never wear them when the FAs are talking or during takeoff or landing.

Well, with the conversations they have in the galley, it's a wonder you ever get them on
But in all seriousness, I've never had an issue wearing mine on AA -- they usually go on when they say you can use approved electronic devices, and they come off when they ask that such devices be turned off.

In my professional opinion (career audio engineer): you can do a LOT better than Bose for less money.

While I totally agree with you on this in terms of thier typical home audio stuff, I didn't think it applied to the NC Headphones. Who has comparable/better ones at a bettter price? IIRC, the Sony NCs are at least as $$$ as the Bose.

For courtesy I remove them during the safety demo (unless its on the monitor), but put my NC Audio Techics back on. I turn the power off during take off and enable them after a minute of so of climbing as sometimes they are a little late in announcing the 10k ft. So landings take them off I want everything packed to leave quickly.
I tried the Bose, and prefer over the ear variety but the Bose headphones create a vacuum on my ear when I fall sleep with my head pressed against the window, whereas the Audio Technics don't.
I going to try the new Bose and see if they suffer the same as the QC1's.

That actually does beg the question.
How fast does it normally take to get to 10k? Obviously there are some local conditions at play here eg; SNA, and others such as steep ascent like in Innsbruck.
