I think this is a great idea and step in the right direction fora media slammed AA. I would also like everyone to know I received an nice formal response letter from Mr Arpey (or someone on his staff Im sure) about a letter I had sent weeks prior dealing with some issues I have had. I can honestly say that getting a response (any response) was a great pleasure and I look forward to flying AA on Saturday for my first segments of the year!
Fly safe everyone.

No offense taken. We're all trying to help. This is a disaster of unimaginable proportions. Anything we can do to help we should. And I too applaud AA for everything it is doing.

Just as a data point, I've tried twice this morning to make a donation via the link provided by AA; in both cases after completing the secure on-line form, the ARC site timed out while I was awaiting confirmation that the donation has gone through. One assumes the ARC servers are being slammed, but it's bad form to leave donors hanging without acknowledgment that their contribution has or hasn't been received. I really hate having to phone the credit card people to find out if I've been double-billed on a charitable contribution.

I see no way to know if this donation has gone through or not.
I am planning to wait a few days, see if it hits my card then try again.

a little cross-forum speculation
Of course, in the true spirit of speculation, I have no first-hand information as I sit behind my desk in Miami and type this.

+1 Also donated through site and have not received email confirmation. It's been about 3-4 hours. I'll give them at least 24 hours for it to come in, and if it doesn't I guess I'll have to contact the Red Cross -- I did print out my donation info and it has a confirmation number. I just hope the RC is better at getting help to the people of Haiti than they are in getting out email receipts. And kudos to AA for this!

There's a thread on a-liners.net where there were reports that there is terrible congestion on the ramp area at PAP and that there is little room for more aircraft. Apparently PAP doesn't have the logistics infrastructure to get the incoming supplies out of the ramp area quickly enough.

OT: I'm curious what metric you're using for this? I know a few years back ARC had a high percentage of budget going to Fundraising and Administrative (i.e.: not to Programs), but that was apparently abnormal, and they have been back to 90% for Programs over the last few years. Some of my other charities do even better, but 90% is much better than some you might see on late night TV quite frequently.

My understanding is that it is mostly the aircraft themselves cause much of the jam; the Haitian airport has no fuel to refuel the planes.

Good points all! I checked my Amex and my American Red Cross donation is missing. My Doctors Without Borders (MSF) is showing so it appears to be a Red Cross technical issue. Edit: I went to the website to donate again and Red Cross has a message:
I'm going to wait until tomorrow (well beyond the 12 hours) and if my payment doesn't show up, I'll make another one. I don't think I saw that confirmation screen when I made the first one so maybe the Red Cross hasn't received it.
Due to the overwhelming generosity of our supporters, we are experiencing a lag time in donation processing. Transactions may take up to 12 hours to process.

FYI -- I received my receipt from the Red Cross today -- about 24 hours after making the contribution.

AA flies to Haiti and has been mentioned in the news about being in talks with the gov't about how quickly it can resume its flights. AE has already been helping with relief flights (see linked article). Now, AA and AE are also giving us a small incentive to donate to the Haitian relief efforts ^^. We've had posts before about AA charitable efforts and I continue to be impressed by AA's heart .
The miles for donations will be available on Thursday. I'll edit this thread once it's available.
