Missing / someone else used / unauthorized use my SWU / VIP / eVIP (merged)

I received my upgrade summary via e-mail today and noticed that I had one less eVIP than I should. AAdvantage CS was able to tell me the name of the person who had used it, but I had never heard of them and certainly hadn't requested an upgrade.
Upon further research, the rep told me that sometimes, upgrades are incorrectly pulled from the wrong account when the EXP desk switches between calls and neglects to change the account they're working on.
Never heard of this happening, but certainly something to look out for.

Did they add one back to your account?

They need to perform an audit, but apparently it should be back in ~2 wks.

Had it happen with miles (3 x 90k J awards) once.

A call to EXP desk resolved it and it was fixed within a few hours.

The whole issue about the 'security question' that could stop this from happening is a mystery. What happened probably is that your AAdvantage number was typed in place of the proper number (tranposed or other) and since your account had the proper eVIP left (or miles in my case) the transaction went thru.

They are supposed to ask a 'security question' when making the removal (typically *****************) but this appears common that they do not do it 100%.

Yup . pays to keep track of your Miles/eVIP balances! Hope it reappears back in your account soon. My error was fixed very quickly!

Good luck on getting that VIP back, jkirsch - and please let us know how this resolves.

Last week I transferred a VIP to another's PNR, and the AAgent asked me several "security questions" (I'm loath to state what those questions were on a public forum, however.) I can't say I minded one bit. ^

ROFL! Now you'll probably let the falcon questions out of the bag too... I have to admit I was impressed they did ask me several questions, and not just ...-u-me I was the VIP "owner."

Enjoy LON, and have great flights!

Yes, I have experienced the same where my VIP upgrades were incorrrectly reduced. A quick call to the EXP desk and they took care of crediting my account. It took a couple weeks, but was done with no hassle.

I guess if you are desperate for an upgrade and have no VIP's left, wouldn't hurt to give AA a call and see if they give you an upgrade on someone else's dime. Not sure how that would work out in the end.....

if they neglected to switch between accounts, does that mean that you received miles for that flight too?

It happened to me and it was a pain in the a** getting it back. Had to go through AAdvantage customer service (EXP desk doesn't correct those mistakes...they just initiate them ). After I finally got it credited, it promptly disappeared because it had "expired". When I finally made it clear that I didn't know "Mr John Q. Thief" who had used it and thus shouldn't be penalized for it's expiration since I didn't have it in my account to use, they finally credited it back to my account. It appeared as a "customer service " evip with an expiration date one year later than the one improperly debited. A royal pain in the a**, but finally got it back with a year's use added. Btw, John Q Thief's AAdvantage number was nothing like mine, so it wasn't a fat finger mistake.

This thread is interesting because I have an extra EVIP that I shouldn't have.
