Is it reasonable to assume they will now hold back inventory for these types of upgrades, making it even harder for elites to get sticker upgrades?

To me, it's not reasonable to automatically assume that.

Interesting - since it will only be offered thru the self-service kiosks, passengers on international trips won't be offered an upgrade on an originating domestic segment even though everyone else might be offered the upgrade. Example: IND-ORD-LHR where the pax is not upgraded on the ORD-LHR segment. IND-ORD often has empty F seats (as does IND-DFW), yet the LHR customer won't be offered the upgrade.

That's bound to make a favorable impression once word of that gets around.

Sounds like online check-in doesn't count as self-service?

Also, are $50/sticker upgrades higher on the priority list than $25/sticker upgrades from GLD/PLT?

Very interesting. Kudos to AA for finding a new way to generate revenue without upsetting the masses (I'm being serious). ^

I assume the LFBUs will come out of X inventory?

Cheers,

That route sure does. Usually, it's EXP and/or paid F + non-revs in the F cabin on those flights.

Well, at least "those people" will be charged twice as much as the PLTs and GLDs, so it will still be a more exclusive community. . .

"elite customers traveling in the main cabin on award tickets"

I guess I finally figured out how upgrade that award ticket

I like this part too

"if a customer accepts the lfbu offer and subsequently experiences a flight cancellation, we should attempt to honor a premium cabin seat on the *protect* flight.
if unable to accommodate in premium cabin, the
customer will be entitled to a refund"

It looks like the self-service machine will only offer the paid upgrade after checks are performed to see how many are on the waitlist + some seat to (hopefully) be sold at the last minute.

It doesn't appear that the LFBU is a waitlist instrument, rather it appears that it is confirmed at check-in.

Depending on how one reads this:
"in addition to how many aadvantage members are waitlisted for an upgrade"
There's certainly room for *hope* that the l.f.b.u.'s won't even be offered if there are (numerous) elites waiting to upgrade.

One would hope/assume that they would have a priority lower than Gold.

Could get messy if not handled well by AA...

It all boils down to how it takes into account the upgrade waitlist. If these new upgrades take priority over elites on the waitlist, then there is a problem. My guess is there will be a little of both. I like the fact that it may allow you to upgrade an award ticket, isn't that new???

It certainly is-- and I like the fact that they made that part contingent on being elite-- that was good thinking.
