13 Apr 2020: AA announces AAdvantage card spend during 1 May - 31 Dec 2020 counts toward Million Miler status. Link

● May 1, 1981: American introduces AAdvantage®, the first airline loyalty program

● The initial Million Miler balance on 30 Nov 2011 included every AAdvantage mile ever earned in the program; after, only flown (actually base) miles shown below count.

● As of 1 Dec 1, 2011 "Miles earned toward Million Miler status are based on the distance of your flight for travel on American marketed flights or the base miles earned for travel on eligible partner marketed flights.[/hl]." - link

Minimum miles guarantee does not apply to MM program; only actual Base Miles will be counted. Miles flown on airlines only earning Redeemable Miles (not Elite Qualifying) won't count. (N.B. Neither BarclayCard Aviator AAdvantage Citi ExecutiveSM / AAdvantage® World Elite™ MasterCard® credit card miles count for MM status, not even the EQM earned by those making the required spend in one calendar year.)

There have been no changes made to the Million Miler program since 2011 to date, nor any changes announced. Platinum Pro and Executive Platinum will not be added to the program, according to AA spokespersons. (30 Nov 2011).

Q. What does lifetime AAdvantage Platinum and lifetime AAdvantage Gold status mean for me?

A. For the life of the AAdvantage Platinum and Gold programs, you will continue to enjoy the rewards and recognition of that elite level regardless of your annual elite-qualifying activity.

Q. Which miles will count for the AAdvantage Million Miler program?

A. "Miles earned toward Million Miler status are based on the distance of your flight for travel on American marketed flights or the base miles earned for travel on eligible partner marketed flights.” (Literally, “butt in seat” miles flown on qualifying revenue flight.)

Q. How can I track my progress toward reaching AAdvantage Million Miler status?

A. AAdvantage Million Miler activity is displayed in the members' AAdvantage account on aa.com separately from award miles so progress toward reaching this special designation can be easily tracked.
● At 1,000,000 Million Miler miles, AAdvantage members receive lifetime Advantage Gold® status and 35,000 AAdvantage bonus miles

● At 2,000,000) Million Miler miles, AAdvantage members receive lifetime AAdvantage Platinum® status and 4 SWUs / Systemwide Upgrades

● At each additional Million Miler mark, AAdvantage members will receive 4 additional SWUs. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Link to aa.com page .

Q. Will AA add Platinum Pro or Executive Platinum to lifetime status levels?

AA spokespeople announced in late 2016 neither status tier is under consideration for lifetime status.

AAdvantage Million Miler Program as of Dec 2011 (master thd)

As promised, today I’m sharing with you the details of the new AAdvantage® Million MilerSM program.

Here’s how it’s going to work:

Starting December 1, 2011, AAdvantage base miles earned by flying on American Airlines, American Eagle® or the AmericanConnection® carrier or any AAdvantage program participating airline will count towards Million Miler status. Before you get nervous about just BIS miles counting, for those of you who have the new Citi Executive(SM) / AAdvantage® World Elite(TM) MasterCard® credit card, as a limited time offer, one AAdvantage mile for every dollar spent on eligible purchases using this card will count toward Million Miler status. Bonus miles and additional miles earned through special offers will not count. The Citi Executive(SM) / AAdvantage® World Elite(TM) MasterCard® credit card account must be open and in good standing by December 1, 2011, and miles must post to billing statements through December 2012. Realize that this makes American Airlines the only major US airline to provide a significant non-flight way to achieve Million Miler status. And one of the few to allow Million Miler miles accrual on participating airlines.

Here are the benefits at each Million Miler threshold:

● At 1,000,000 Million Miler miles, AAdvantage members will receive lifetime AAdvantage Gold® status and 35,000 AAdvantage bonus miles (which, as you know, can be exchanged for eight 500-mile upgrades if that’s what you prefer)

● At 2,000,000 Million Miler miles, AAdvantage members will receive lifetime AAdvantage Platinum® status and four one-way systemwide upgrades

● At each additional Million Miler mile mark, AAdvantage members will receive four additional one-way systemwide upgrades

You might be wondering about the AAdvantage miles you’ve earned so far. The good news is that when the Million Miler program launches on December 1, your starting Million Miler balance will include every AAdvantage mile you’ve ever earned since joining the program. And any Million Miler status or benefits you’ve earned so far remain as well.

When you log into your AAdvantage account on AA.com on and after December 1, you’ll see your Million Miler balance separate from your award miles, so you can easily track your progress toward these mileage milestones.

For more information you can visit http://bit.ly/aadvmillion or ask any questions you may have right here.

Thank you for your continued loyalty, and we look forward to seeing you on board soon.

Maya Leibman
President – AAdvantage Loyalty Program

Our goal was to create a program that was at least as good as our competitors’ and we believe we've done that by allowing accrual on AAdvantage participating airlines as well as providing a non-flight way to earn Million Miler status. The Million Miler program is intended primarily to reward members who earn their miles by flying. That said, all Program to Date miles earned through November 30, 2011, will count toward Million Miler status. Additionally, at every Million Miler threshold, members will receive a new elite-status membership card with a distinctive Million Miler emblem denoting how many Million Miler miles they have obtained as well as a set of personalized luggage tags. Q. I already have a lot of miles; can I be rewarded with 500-mile upgrades instead? A. AAdvantage elite status members can easily exchange 35,000 bonus miles for eight (8) 500-mile upgrades on AA.com. Q How can I track my progress toward reaching Million Miler status? A. Thank you, AmericanAirlines, for passing along this info. For the most part, it sounds like what we were expecting. I suspect it will be a relief to many on this forum to have a firm timetable for this upcoming program change, in particular since it is now a documented part of AAdvantage.

Now, those of us who are approaching a MM threshold have to be sure to transfer as many RDMs as possible into our accounts before Dec 1!

Here is something to consider for some of you who are chasing an illusive Million Miler status with new American:

My son crossed 1 Million with AA 5 years ago when he was 16. Obviously, no CC spending/bonuses contributed to that. Based on his total lifetime miles, I guess he has about 850K flown miles that would be counted under the new system. While in college, his paid flying almost stopped and over the last 12 months he only has 105 EQD. This means that he is at the very bottom of upgrade list. On last flight from RDU to CLT (complementary upgrades to everyone) he was #34 out of 36. He also did not get the new Million Miler tag or even his new Gold membership card. The new AA doesn't care...

i would actually rather be #34 on aa list and not clear than #4 or #14 as PP or Plat as my expectations are aligned accordingly.. free bags, priority boarding and economy plus are all very meaningful benefits..

It’s easy to contact AA for 1MM baggage tags and Gold card, because I guarantee you there isn’t a human involved in caring or de icing to send these batch processed items unless you call or use the eform.

As for whether lifetime status is worth anything, IMO LT Platinum status is useful for free baggage allotments, lounge access and a number of other things (including earning more Award Miles than one with a plain white AAdvantage card). Upgrades? They’re getting scarcer, given seat reductions, 12 month EQD spend influence, etc. But upgrades are hardly the sole Lifetime status benefit.

Sure, LT PLT offers some more. My point was that with recent AAdvantage devaluation and new protocols, LT Gold gives one very little benefits. One cannot even choose any Y seat without paying extra. Who checks the luggage anyway! However, while it is rather trivial to get AA Gold during a qualification year, nowadays 1 MM requires quite a commitment.

Plenty of people check baggage. People going to trade shows, divers (ahem!) and many participants in various sports, people going to cruise or to special events, etc. A few benefits vs no benefits...

And a "few" extra (40%) redeemable miles if crediting to AA :-( Perhaps someday I will need the one free bag LTG allows.........

When you are on the Million Miler tab, there is an “Activity by month” drop-down on the right that you can use to look at the changes for the past 6 months.

They mail a card each year for whatever status level you're at, even if you're merely Gold, and it'll have an expiration date of 1/31/19

and many times they don't, like they did to us. LTP and LTG, no cards on requal for EXP and PP. However, you can pull a copy of the card on the app, and for us, I always make sure our status appears on the BP. We are of the persuasion we always have a backup paper BP, and have used it to very good advantage in LHR during ERROPS, and the Sakura First lounge in May.
