Interesting that this allows for rebooking one day earlier too for those who don't mind traveling on Christmas Day. Thumbs up to AA 's crystal ball

Question

Original inventory required. Good luck with that (for many buckets) over the next few days.

I assume it's different for each person, but when I've changed my itinerary in the past even with that requirement it was given to me in different fare inventory. YMMV

12/26 - US Eastern Seaboard Weather and flight cancellations?

Looks like a decent storm is headed towards the Northeast with 6-10 inches falling and 30 MPH winds on 12/26.

Anyone had any experience getting out of JFK on intercon flights during winter conditions? Do they generally go? I feel as though JFK rarely closes.

Am scheduled to fly tomorrow night to S. America and wondering if I should reschedule earlier in the day down through DFW or MIA to avoid the storm.

The runways are generally ok. The gates are another story- remember the JetBlue fiasco of Feb 2007. I would change if you can- I would minimally expect delays- which could lead to cancellations as the storm is predicted to intensify over Sunday night.

If the storm materializes as planned, then there will significant cancellations and delays.

AA has issued a travel waiver:

I would call the EXP desk pronto to see if they will reroute you. If not, get to JFK super early if the weather is materialzing and see if you can get rerouted through MIA. JFK to DFW there is only one flight. If you have an AC membership, they can also help you.

I have a similar question, I am headed to Sao Paulo GRU on Monday via DFW (LGA-DFW-GRU).

My LGA-DFW is around 330pm with a tight connection (645pm DFW arrival, 730pm departure). Should I move up my outbound on LGA-DFW? The pro is it gives me more time to get to DFW, the con is the storm will be tapering off early Monday and maybe the earlier flight ends up more delayed.

Any thoughts?

UPDATED 25 DEC 10, 2300 EST:

Blizzard Warning
Statement as of 11:00 PM EST on December 25, 2010

... Blizzard Warning remains in effect from Sunday into Monday...

* locations... northeast New Jersey... New York City... Long Island
and coastal southern Connecticut as well as all of southeastern
Connecticut.

* Hazards... heavy snow and strong winds... with considerable
blowing and drifting of snow with near zero visibility at
times.

* Accumulations... 11 to 16 inches... with locally higher amounts. Snow
may mix with or change to rain and sleet at the height of the
storm late Sunday night across eastern Long Island... and
possibly across coastal southeast Connecticut... which could hold
down amounts there... but only after significant accumulations
have already taken place.

* Impacts... extremely dangerous travel conditions developing
Sunday afternoon into the evening due to significant snow
accumulations... and strong winds causing considerable blowing
and drifting of snow. Visibilities will be near zero at
times... with whiteout conditions expected. Strong winds may also
down some power lines... tree limbs... and Christmas decorations.

* Timing... light snow will begin during Sunday morning... then
become heavy at times from Sunday afternoon into much of Sunday
night. Light snows will likely linger into early Monday morning.

* Winds... .during the height of the storm Sunday night... north
winds will increase to 20 to 35 mph with gusts 40 to 55 mph
likely.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Blizzard Warning means severe winter weather conditions are
expected or occurring. Falling and blowing snow with strong winds
and poor visibilities are likely. This will lead to whiteout
conditions... making travel extremely dangerous. Do not travel. If
you must travel... have a winter survival kit with you. If you get
stranded... stay with your vehicle.

Wirelessly posted (Apple iPhone: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148 Safari/6533.18.5)

Source for the above Blizzard Warning is NWS (National Weather Service).

I'm supposed to fly AA 1385 JFK-BGI on Monday morning, and it's not looking good. The seat map is opening up quickly as people cancel or reschedule! Luckily my ticket is an award, so I can redeposit and hopefully get the taxes refunded if I end up not going.

I just called to reschedule my 5pm EWR-ORD flight to the 1250pm flight. Unfortunately, the 10am was already full but that was AE anyway.

Looks like the 12/26 cancellations have begun. Looks like mostly non-777s so far.

JFK-GIG canceled;
JFK-BCN canceled
JFK-CDG #120 canceled;
