Stopover in Phoenix?

I'm planning a one-way trip from ORD-OAK to head back to Cal for school, and I want to include a stopover in PHX for a couple of days to visit my family w/o having to buy two tickets. Anyone know of a (reasonable) way of doing this? Is there a stopover fee? Would there be a certain fare classes where this was possible and others where it would not be? Could you only book something like this through phone reservations?

Looking for cheapest cost here....would it be better to look at (gulp) Southwest? *shudder*

In answering your question, a multi-city search will do the trick for your inquiry. It will allow you to book both of your segments (ORD-PHX, and PHX-OAK) on one e-ticket. This can be done over the Internet at airline websites and many airfare search engines.

As you're wanting the cheapest fare, that will depend on your dates. America West offers your proposed itinerary for $228 (taxes included) for most dates. Southwest, on the other hand, will vary greatly (as stated, depending on dates). The cheapest is about $181 (taxes included), but will leverage much higher if you pick a day where Promotionals/Internet Fares are unavailable.

Hey Mateo, I think I know what you're referring to: the flat rate PHX or LAs stopover. I haven't seen that in HP routing rules since I moved to PHX, so I think it's long gone.

If you do want to stop in PHX tos ee your family, I find that the one way fares PHX--SoCal (ONT/SNA/LAX/SAN/BUR) then from there up to the Bay are cheaper than PHX--Bay through fares- plus if you fly on WN, you get extra FF credits. Given WN's booking site format, it's easy to book a PHX-ONT-OAK.
