Flying HP without luggage; check-in necessary before security at PHX?

It's been awhile since I've flown HP. I'm taking a flight to SAN from PHX with no checked luggage. Do I have to check-in at the ticket counter or can I proceed directly to security with my e-mailed flight confirmation and check-in at the gate?

You can get your boarding pass at a machine right outside security. But PHX is a TSA controlled airport - which means no going thru with just an eticket

You can check-in and print your boarding pass from home too.

When did this change? I haven't flown out of Terminal Four in the last three weeks, but before that one could simply present an e-ticket receipt to proceed through the security checkpoint there. Not all checkpoints under TSA control require a boarding pass or security document to pass through the checkpoints.

As of yesterday, Terminal Three was still accessible with a printed itinerary, ticket receipt, etc.
