ANA Hired First Ever Male FAs in Japan.

This April ANA has hired four males as a FA (flight attendant) in Japan. This is first ever ANA has hired male FA in Japan. ANA has FA base at LHR and FRA which was opened around 2001 and ANA has hired male FAs at LHR and FRA. ANA has management candidate program at a headquarter in Tokyo, and those management candidates do work as FA for a year or two as part of the program. However, ANA has never hired male for a job position of FA in their company history.

In 1986 equal opportunity employment based on gender became law in Japan. However, ANA has never hired male for their FA job, was similar situation over at JAL also. This topic was occasionally talked about in media why ANA and JAL do not hire male for their FA even the law prevent them from hiring female only. Finally this year 2019 ANA has hired first ever male FA in their company history in Japan.

That is not the same situation as JAL, JAL has had male flight attendants based in Japan for years They even have a few doing the role of Head of the cabin, apart form "senior cabin attendant" JAL does not really have a title. But the staff member in the white jacket. I met one of them this week on a flight from SGN

That's right. I've been flying JAL since 2003, and they had male Japanese FAs back then.

Little weird talking about JAL on ANA forum, but I said JAL did not hire male FAs in Japan for long time (till '70s JAL actually hired male FAs to work as purser and chief purser and female FAs were hired primary to work as stewardess and assistant purser) but last few decades JAL did not hire male FAs in Japan. That does not mean JAL does not have male FAs.

ANA and JAL has management training program at their headquarter. As part of their program those in management training program works at various sections of the company, including cabin crew section. Those in management training program work as a FA for a year or two during management training program. As nothing surprising in Japanese corporate ways, there are only males in management training program. You will see them working as a FA on flights, but they were not hired as FAs by company.

Both ANA and JAL has non-Japan FA base where FAs are hired locally, not Japanese FAs based outside of Japan. JAL currently has FA base outside of Japan at BKK, FRA, HKG, LHR, SHA/PVG, SIN, and TPE. When JAL had Brazil route JAL had FA base at Brazil. At those non-Japan FA base both ANA and JAL actively hire male FAs. It is almost like both ANA and JAL know they cannot get away with hiring only female FAs at non-Japan location regarding local laws and regulations.

JAS (Japan Air Systems) hired some handful of male FAs after 1986 law in Japan prohibit gender discrimination on employment. Upon merger of JAS and JAL on 2006, those male FAs from JAS continues to work as FA at JAL JAL Express also hired male FAs, and after the merger of operation of JAL and JAL Express on 2014, those male FAs from JAL Express continues to work as FA at JAL.

There are male FAs at JAL currently where they came from various background but was not hired as FA by JAL in Japan. Public relation of JAL has admitted on interviews by media that on 2017 JAL has hired few male FAs and that was first time they hired male FAs for very long time. This topic has come about once in a while in Japanese media because since 1986 companies in Japan cannot just hire one gender for one specific job. Even ANA and JAL has slowly hired female for pilot, mechanic, and ground aircraft crew which was traditionally male only. But for what every reason ANA and JAL were hiring only female for FAs in Japan.
