Changing part of the itinerary - will the seats come back?

I have 4 seats JFK-PEK-JFK in J on AirChina booked for April'19.
I need to change it to JFK-ORD-NRT, PEK-JFK. ANA says the entire reservation must be canceled but the inbound leg may not come back into inventory once canceled.
Any ideas to prevent that?

It is a gamble. No way to know, sadly. Once availability goes back to inventory, all bets are off as to what fare class they end up in.

thanks...
PEK-JFK has 2 seats available in F, a 35K mile upgrade. I'm trying to cancel this reservation one seat at a time so that I can at least rebook it in F if the seats aren't coming back.
But I have no mileage in the account currently, and ANA agent says she can't put a reservation on hold without the miles.
So frustrating...

Is this award or revenue ?
If revenue, an ANA's agent is wrong.
You can hold part of your itinerary, change your route, then recalculate and reissue tickets.

I am quite sure it is an award booking, it it was a revenue booking, it would be neither here nor there whether OP had mileage in the account to make the change from J to F.
