Shuffling back and forth between airside & landside at Haneda/Narita?

Roughly 10 years ago, I cleared passport control and was airside at Narita. However, I forgot an item landside, thus got a hold of an ANA associate to help me re-enter the terminal. I recall being escorted out of airside with an ANA staff, but completely forget if I needed to go through passport control again or if I flagged an agent on the side to show I had already 'emigrated'. Nonetheless, the point is, going airside to landside to airside was possible.

Is this still allowed?

Depending on the purpose and urgency, yes you can shuffle between "landside" and "airside" while escorted by properly accredited staff. How else do airline/airport employees do their job at the airport. However, getting approval for this is not easy, since you have to go through the "backside security access" and all that needs the badge access and long explanations why you (a non approved person) needs to pass through.

I have done this frequently at Narita - to get out from the terminal airside, simply head towards the transfer security which is just behind a glass window. I remember it to be beside a McDonald's. Ask to be allowed to exit to immigration for transit purposes, no Japanese needed. This is a lot more difficult and cumbersome at Haneda though, where you will require an airline staff (from your incoming flight) to walk you one level down through a restricted elevator to exit. It's particularly useful if you need a shower before heading for your transit tours.
