Dummy Return Booking

Planning an trip which will only work with NH on an one-way. In the past I did this I booked NRT-HNL in Y and cancelled the ticket to get an refund on taxes. (Miles are not refundable). Is NRT-HNL still the best option inform of least amount of miles while meeting NH's RT rules?

Returning on an diff carrier, usually I fly IAH-NRT vice versa. Hard to accommodate 3 PAX on the same flight I end up using KE to or from.
