$500+ for taxes/fees for redemption?

I'm looking to book a R/T J class ticket to Europe using my ANA miles. It's over $500 in taxes and fees. Any pointers to avoid such high fees?

Thumbs down ANA is so far out of line with their fees

I put in a dummy booking ORD-PEK in J on ANA flights for Oct. 2011, 2 tickets, and got over $900 in taxes and fuel surcharges. I'm redeeming and flying on UA and OZ. I'd like to fly ANA but cannot afford it. This ridiculously high taxes have to be putting off a lot of paying passengers as well as ward fliers from using ANA.

Yes:
  1. Redeem on *A metal.
  2. Redeem on VS. (As fumitani mentioned)
  3. Earn miles/status on another *A carrier and redeem on NH metal with minimal surcharge.

If it makes you guys/gals feel any better, NH isn't the only one doing this. AC redemptions on AC metal also carry a very heavy surcharge compared to *A metal redemptions.

Dump all your miles into UA/US/CO as US based FFPs do not charge fuel surcharges on award tickets.

Yea, but UA and soon to be CO have STARnet blocking so gotta be careful around them. US is still pretty decent. And if OP won't fly on AC metal, it's not a bad choice either as it only charges surcharge on AC metal.

Cool not as high as I expected

I'm now ticketed and here's what my taxes ended up for these flights:

MCI-ORD on UA
ORD-PEK on UA
PEK-KWL on CA
KWL-PVG on CA
HGH-ICN-ORD on OZ
ORD-MCI on UA

Two business class award tickets, $227 each in taxes/fees. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, but still twice as much as US carriers charge.
