Update: tried the number at the top but only got options for baggage and special assistance. Was given a Dutch number but after choosing an option from the menu the call just drops. \_(ツ)_/

I'm not sure what else you think dialling an Alitalia customer service number would connect you to - in ALL cases, it will be to an "AZ call centre" (which for Europe/most of the world are in Italy and Albania)

They don't have a local set-up in each country (even those directly served by Alitalia) with local staff answering local calls.

Exactly that, not being as familiar with Alitalia's set-up in each and every country (as you are ??), I assumed that similar many other airlines they WOULD have a local office.

Thought might be best place to put this but having similar issues - have tried calling US # many times in last few days and can't get through anyone. Usually on hold for about 20 minutes before it gets picked up but then I hear nothing??? Have flights in Sept that are clearly not happening anymore but need updating or refund. Thoughts?

call the us number. follow the prompts for a new business class reservation. That seems to get an answer in 15 minutes or less. And be warned that calls on the US number seem to auto-disconnect after one hour - even if you are on with an agent.

Just a quick update for those folks trying to call Alitalia. In my experience, I wait on hold for about 15-20 minutes, during which time there is a pre-recorded message and hold music. Then, the line goes dead. If I continue to hold, even though the line seems dead, after another 20 or 30 minutes an agent comes on the line suddenly with no notice. I've had this happen now about four times. My advice to folks that want to reach an agent through the call center is to hold on even if it appears the line is dead.

This is not to say the agent is actually able to help. At one point they even screwed up my reservation worse than before. But it is a way to get in touch with an agent.
