Upgrading Award Ticket
I'm looking to redeem miles (via Amex points so can do either Flying Blue, Delta or Alitalia) for an economy ticket on Alitalia long haul FCO-USA with the hope of being able to later upgrade with cash to either PE or J. My preference is to book via Flying Blue or Delta given Alitalia's financial situation. Is there any benefit to booking on Alitalia ticket stock (as an award) for an upgrade (either in advance via bid for upgrade or at checkin/at the airport)? Also, I've seen conflicting information about whether award tickets are upgrade-able - has anyone successfully upgraded them?
