Alitalia to launch FCO-IAD

Announced today by Mr Gubitosi, one of the 3 commissioner who runs the Italian carrier.
Rome-Washington flights will be available as of spring 2019.

No further details so far, I would expect something more about it in the upcoming days.

Great news!
But also confusing considering Alitalia's legal state.

What's confusing? They're still in business trying to survive. If they decided that this will be profitable, so be it!

Also, Alitalia is still part of the North Atlantic Joint Venture together with Delta/Air France/KLM, meaning that any launch would have to be discussed/made together with/through the partners. That aside, [Armchair CEO] I am not entirely convinced about its long-term sustainability/profitability (leaving Alitalia's financial woes on one side for a second) United operates the very same route on a summer-only basis, which says a lot about the yields (and IAD is a UA's hub hence, given their large network, surely they wouldn't have had any issues with operating an annual service) [/Armchair CEO]
