The Trains from Varese to MXP *should* start running on June 10th this year, as far as Italy and Trenitalia were finally finished with their work (paid by Switzerland)... And there is no direct train between Lugano and MXP (need to change train in Mendrisio) and the connection runs only every 2 hours and not 2 trains per hour... http://www.fahrplanfelder.ch/fileadm...s/2018/630.pdf
So not really good news for the Region of Lugano... And I doubt that this market is as important for MXP...

Air Italy is losing several of its leased aircraft this summer; one of its five leased Qatar A330s goes to Blue Panorama this month, with another two to leave the Air Italy fleet in July and August. There's a squeeze on the shorthaul fleet too, as (like so many airlines), Air Italy is having to cope without the arrival of the 737 Max into its fleet - it was originally due to have 4 by June.
The unions are also getting restive; Air Italy flight attendants aren't getting enough hours, and they are getting fed up with all the wet lease operators being brought in to patch up the network.

Long live to Alitalia!
It seems that Air Italy will be gone very soon. Rumors say it will stop fly end of February.
Another evidence that transports are a big issue in Italy....including highways badly managed and rails not correctly maintained.

I may now confirm the bad news for the sector: https://www.airitaly.com/it-it/
Stop all flights after 25 February: refund or rebooking where possible.

Simply because someone believed that Air Italy was part of the offensive of Oneworld against Alitalia.
In fact Alitalia is surviving while Air Italy finally gave up after few months.
So, yes, Alitalia is still here...and, no worries, Alitalia will likely remain among us as explained in other threads.
