saving money on alaska travel
 
some tips based on my July vacation:

1) check out www.restaurant.com - has some good deals on anchorage area and homer restaurants (additional promo codes are also usually available in the SPAM section of FT)

2) think about camping - some great campsites

3) bid on www.priceline.com for anchorage hotels - and use www.biddingfortravel.com to work out strategy

4) consider purchasing www.toursaver.com discount booklet (also available second hand on ebay from early summer onwards)

5) save on expensive wildlife/scenery trips by a) getting up early in morning and taking side roads and b) using state ferries eg between whittier and valdez
