Good places for crab/restaurant recs?

So I will be in Anchorage in late June because my cruise ends in Whittier and I'm flying out two days later.

Any restaurant recommendations? Specifically places that do crab?

Any crab you get in Anchorage is likely to have been frozen for months since the main seasons are in the autumn and winter, when the harvest is even allowed. You can get golden king crab legs (frozen) at Simon and Seafort's for $135 if you want to splurge. However given you're cruising I'd look at ports of call en route for a chance to eat Dungeness crab (which has a longer harvest period) which many of us find superior to snow crab, and way, way less pricey than king. Better yet, have Dungeness crab in Vancouver before you depart.

Bummer about that since I live in San Francisco where we have lots of Dungeness.

I did a search that turned up a lot of neat looking diners and breakfast places. That would actually work time wise.

Thanks for the info about crab up there.

Sorry to bump an old thread but wondering if crab may be fresher in November, and (if so) if there are any places in particular I should be considering in or near Anchorage.

Check the same places as above; however the Bering Sea crab fisheries have been closed and/or catches reduced hugely for the past couple of years due to feared collapses in the population. November is when the red king crab fishery in the Bering Sea and North Pacific would typically have opened, but it's been closed or two years now with no word on reopening. The "snow crab" (Opelio) harvest in the Bering has also now been closed due to stocks declining because of warming waters. Stick with Dungeness if you can find it.

Good to know -- I will temper my expectations. However I will probably stop at Simon & Seafort's anyway as they participate in Landry's Select Club. Looking forward to going even if fresh crab isn't available

FWIW, the halibut cheeks special (sometimes on menu, sometimes available off-menu if you ask nicely) was for many years my preferred birthday dinner in Anchorage.

Seems to currently be on the menu online anyway...

(I'm not a crab or other shellfish person, so I can't attest to the quality of those items.)
