Russian Plane over ANC
I was just driving through Midtown Anchorage and noticed a plane flying over that didn't look quite right. Sure enough Flight Aware confirmed it was a Antonov An-124 Ruslan. I don't believe I've ever seen an Antonov in Anchorage before. Here is the Flight Aware link: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/...235Z/PANC/KIAH
I've also never heard of Volga-Dnepr Airlines. Two firsts for me tonight. |
I know these are the only planes that can transport the GE90, so might be trying to get an engine to a 77F.
There's also been one at SEA this summer pretty consistently. Suspect its also GE90 related. |
It's on its way to IAH now. |

These An-124s were also fairly frequent visitors to KNUQ (Moffett Field) a bit north of SJC. Not sure if they still go there since I haven’t worked in the area recently. |

Seen them several times in ANC and other locations in the US. Always exciting. From the title I was thinking it was a military aircraft... :o

Not too uncommon for those beasts to land in ANC. Since we are talking about Russian planes at ANC, also worth noting that Yakutia resumes its seasonal PKC-ANC flight tomorrow. It’s only running for a few weeks this year. |
A couple of weeks ago at ANC, there were at least 4 ea 747's cargo planes on the ramp at the same time one of the Dreamlifters (diverted). Like the Dreamlifters, wherever it goes, the Antonovs are a head turner.

I see them pretty regularly in Tulsa, which is home to the main AA MX base. Took this pic a few months ago.

It was on the ground in Perth for 6 days, left 2 days ago. Pretty regular visitor there too. |
I've seen these in PER a couple of times - I've always assumed they were transporting mining equipment. I think mining is a pretty big industry in Alaska too right?
Also to to be very technical the An-124 is Ukrainian (although Volga-Dnepr is a Russian airline I think?) |
