Sea Kayaking in Seward, AK
 

We want to try some sea kayaking in Seward, AK. We have never been on a sea kayak before. Canoeing experience we have is a few hours on a river. So, we figured we'll do a 3 hour or a half day sea kayaking tour only, not the full day one that goes to a glacier (thought I like to do that in the future trips).

Three firms below are highly rated in the Trip Advisor. All three offer a Lowell trip. Sunnycove has a fox island one. The question is which tour to pick from which company.

12:00 pm to 6:30 pm- A short afternoon cruise is followed by a salmon bake lunch on Fox Island. After lunch and a short kayaking instruction session you will explore the coast line and coves of Fox island for approximately 2.5 hours. Upon your return you will board a Kenai Fjords Tour boat for your return to Seward. -ages 8 and up

From Lowell Point, your guide will take you along the eastern coastline of the bay - teaching you all about the history of the area, the wildlife, the plants, the intertidal zone, etc as you go. Your destination will vary depending on the day's conditions and the group speed, but you'll either end up at Tonsina Point or a small beach just past there. At Tonsina Point, there is a great walk through the coastal rainforest and you'll enjoy the wonders of the ghost forest. At the right time of year, you can see the salmon running in the clear, shallow waters of Tonsina Creek. If you pass Tonsina Point and head to the next small beach, you'll be able to do a short 5 minute walk to a beautiful 90' (ish) waterfall.

TONSINA CREEK TOUR – 3 hour Paddle Adventure – $69 per person
Our 3-hour excursion is ideal for those with limited time or a tight schedule. We will begin with basic sea
kayak instruction and once on the water, your guide will also provide an informative narration about the small,
fascinating creatures in the intertidal zone and geological features along the rocky shoreline. We’ll watch for
otters and eagles as we paddle to a small tidal creek to explore a ghost forest and an Alaskan salmon habitat.
Occasionally, Orcas, sea lions and porpoise are sighted. Our relaxed paddle will beach along the shore for a
refreshing snack and drink.

We just came back from Alaska trip (wonderful experience). We did a 3-hour Kayak tour with Miller's landing. Our guide Matt was really nice. However, my wife did not enjoy the experience much. The wind and waves were large. It made her nervous. I rated it an OK experience. I was not afraid of choppy waters, but it was a strenuous not enjoyable 3 hours. I would rather kayak in a peaceful lake than in the open sea. It could be just us.

In short, I'd say it really depends on your guide and your interests. If you enjoy challenging sea waters, you would not go wrong with any of the companies.
