Has AS said whether the MVPG comp upgrade certs will be fare restricted? I assume not -- just checking.

Not a peep. I don't expect they will be.

Agreed. Plus, you can't upgrade using miles, miles expire after a year of no activity (and have a 7 year shelf-life) no automatic upgrades for top tier members, etc, etc. Even with these recent changes the AS FF program is still better than any of the other North American FF programs. I switched from Aeroplan a year ago and have been much happier with AS.

MVPG upgrade certs expiring 12/2008 have been issued already for ANY fare: "Upgrades...are valid on any purchased fare."

Miles expire 7 years after you earn them. All miles earned prior to beginning of this year expire year end 2013 or 1 Jan. 2014.

Is this something new, or have I just missed out on this information?

This is what it says on their website:

Mileage Expiration
Mileage Plan Miles do not have an expiration date and may remain in an active account indefinitely, provided that the Mileage Plan Program has not been terminated pursuant to these Conditions of Membership. However, not withstanding any term to the contrary, if a Mileage Plan account is inactive for 3 years, Alaska Airlines may close the account, delete any mileage balance and reassign the Mileage Plan number. Deleted mileage cannot be reinstated. Activity in an account includes redeeming a Mileage Plan award or accruing mileage in the Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan Program.

Got it. Thanks, Missy. I was about to have a very serious "loss of miles" attack. That would have put a huge dent in my retirement plans.

Is Hawaii already at 30,000 points?

I was on the phone (for 30 minutes - I tried hanging up but she kept putting me on hold) talking to reservations and they insisted that Hawaii is 25,000 points for a round trip upgrade. Eventually she said that it is 30,000 and booked in Y,b,m, or h.

Can I use the MVP Gold upgrade certificates?

Oh, you also get an actual first class ticket which can be useful since you can't be told, "well you paid for a coach seat and got a coach seat," during irregular ops when a downgrade occurs.
An AS50 F ticket DOES get COS bonus, which DOES count towards your EQMs for the year. I have booked a couple of trips this way and can confirm this. Basically, even though you used miles to pay for $250 of the ticket, you have an unrestricted ticket and it prints F, (not U) on your boarding pass.
