Landing Gear Through Wing

Ouch. AS1288 last night landed poorly at SNA. 737-800 N516AS.

Glad everyone is ok. Must of been a heck of a downdraft on landing.

Glad everyone made it safely.

SNA was tumultuous yesterday. Smooth as butter before 3pm and then progressively intermittently worse turbulence. Pilots were landing firmly due to the weather too. At least one AS aircraft was diverted to LAX.

It looks like AS pulled the plane from AS1173 (SNA-SEA) to operate in place of N516AS for the mornings SNA-SEA (AS1325) departure. AS1173 was subsequently cancelled. 🤙🏻🍹

Andy, why exactly, were they operating flights to Southern California during tropical storm conditions? Just asking a common sense question to any pilots/ispatchers on here.

I was on BA273 (LHR-SAN) yesterday. We took off and landed (5pm) on time and it was smoother than a normal summer landing into SAN. And, as I was driving home an AS flight was lining up to take off.

Can someone please, for the love of God, shut off the alarm, or whatever sound which is coming out of the phone?

That's an iPhone alarm. I know it well as it's the same annoying sound I use to wake up.

How kind of the pilots to vacate the runway in such condition.

AA, UA, and DL all had arrivals into SNA around the same time. The METAR report from 23:05 at SNA last night was barely anything to write home about (landing in question was at 23:15).

METAR KSNA 210605Z AUTO 2SM +RA BR OVC011 21/19 A2981 RMK AO2 T02060189 PNO $

In English that means calm winds, overcast with rain, visibility 2 miles and a ceiling of 1100 feet. Lousy for SoCal, but hardly out of the ordinary for many other places, especially with a functioning IFR approach. Im too lazy to look up the landing minimums for SNA but considering the stream of arrivals before this incident I wouldnt be too concerned about the weather.

N516AS is a 15 year old 738, and I am fairly sure it is also leased. Im guessing it will be the first of the type for AS to be scrapped after this, although it seems to me they will need to at least repair it enough to get it out of SNA.

To be fair, the METAR at the end of the hour indicates a bit more wind gusting to 26KT: KSNA 210653Z AUTO 14014G26KT. Nothing really out of the ordinary especially for 121 operations, but the weather was probably a little more dynamic than the approximately one hour resolution METAR reports suggest.

Despite the very bad appearance, the damage is likely just to the gear assembly, attachment points, and panels on the wing. My money would be on N516AS flying again before too long.
