Can't pay for a premium upgrade on an AA-issued ticket?

I have a flight on AS next week that I purchased through AA. I'm trying to pay for a premium seat and am told by reservations that I'm not allowed to do so because I purchased my ticket with American. What kind of nonsense is this? Anyone have a workaround?

Maybe some sort of limitation with partner-issue tickets? I recall not being able to select a PE seat (even for money) on AY (or was it FI?) ticketed AS flights. I didnt bother to call since I was able to select exit row seats.

Yes, they say they can't access premium seats or handle paid upgrades on partners.

I had a similar situation on Condor. The routing was SEA-YVR (on AS), YVR-FRA (in J on Condor) and FRA-LHR (on Lufthansa). I was able to upgrade with cash on the Lufthansa segment but could not upgrade or even select a premium seat on the Alaska segment to YVR.

If there are any premium seats left at check-in (24 hours before departure), you will likely be able to purchase an upgraded seat at that point.

Do they force you to pay even if you have AS elite status?
