No more stopovers in South America?

The Luxury Traveller is reporting that AS is no longer allowing stopovers on itineraries in South America.

It says "Intra-South America" so it would appear that you can still fly LAX SCL (stop) EZE on an award, but not PUQ SCL (stop) LIM on an award.

I tried to do LAX-SCL (stopover)-EZE, no go. It is bookable if it is all one trip but when you try to add days at SCL it show no availability. This is not a welcome new development.

That would be a horrible development, if it turns out to be the actual policy, as it is an annual trip / redemption for me.

While I understand some people not liking this change, I suspect the change was most likely mandated by LATAM (now that the Alaska-LATAM partnership is totally independent of any alliance), not Alaska, and Alaska simply had to implement it to maintain the ability to redeem AS miles for LATAM flights. LATAM is famous for springing changes even worse than this on their own LATAM Pass program with no notice.
