I would imagine they'll start retiring the older 73Gs, 73Hs and 739s...

They are great new planes. Now that the 2ku problem is solved, it's my preferred ride.

Does this mean the end of winter fuel stops out of BOS, JFK, and EWR with the increased range vs. the older gen 737s and A320s?

I'm looking forward to consistently having 16FC seats for upgrades rather than the 12 on the 737-8 they often run on my west coast to Hawaii routes. The 737-8 interiors are also old and getting pretty beat up. The rate of wear to planes' interiors is pretty amazing, although not surprising, given the daily usage.

So you read this part, right?

The order includes 737-8, 737-9 and 737-10 aircraft, enabling Alaska to optimally match aircraft size and capability with market characteristics.”

It’s a sucker bet that 737-8s will be in a 12F config.

Or maybe 20F on the MAX 10 (someday)?

  • By 2030, Alaska could operate more than 250 new aircraft from the 737 MAX series.
  • In 2023, a new 737 MAX will be delivered approximately every 10 days.
AS 321T when? I joke, I joke. We have fun here.

Great news! The MAX is a joy to fly. The A321 remains my favorite in the mainline fleet, but the MAX is a solid runner up. I’m happy to hear they’re confident enough in future growth to place such an order and look forward to the retirement of the older jets as these are delivered.

I didn't read that but am confused - do you mean it's a sucker bet the 737-8s will be in a 16F config?

No, I mean what I said. I think AS will configure the 737-8 MAX planes in a 12F configuration just like the 73Hs. The 737-9 MAX and 737-10 MAX will be the ones in a 16F config.

I believe "optimally match aircraft size and capability with market characteristics" does not actually mean "give FTers more free upgrades for their cheap Y tickets". There are a lot of markets where a 737-9 MAX isn't the right plane, but that doesn't mean AS needs to add more F seats to that market than exist on a 73G or 73H.

AS is already going to have a lot more F seats sloshing around the system once the Q400s are gone and replaced with E75s and 737s. My guess is the beancounters probably are looking at DL and AA jealously at their F sell rate, adding even more F at the expense of Y/Y+ on the MAX planes might not help with that.

Yes, with lie-flat seats, free ice cream and ponies for everyone.

My predictions for configs of the new ships (737-8 and 737-10 MAX):

737-8 MAX: 12F 30Y+ 120 Y (matches reconfigured 738)
737-10 MAX: 16F 24Y+ 150Y (matches A321 neo)

While I generally agree with you, "free upgrades for their cheap Y (fares)" have not been a thing for a while now.
