Getting to Taiwan with Alaska points?

I have tons of Alaska points to burn and trying to figure out how to get a business or first class trip to Taiwan and back on from CONUS. Any suggestions on airline partners and how to even look up availability? Im not seeing anything on the regular alaska site.
Thanks all.

JL would be my go-to. CX may be possible (note that CX awards don't show up on AS or AA websites; I suggest searching on the BA site. You will then need to call to book).

If you look at the award chart you can see which airlines can be used for the routing.

What have you researched?
https://www.alaskaair.com/content/mi...s/award-charts
Airlines/routes listed on wikipedia (may not be up to date)--->https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taoyua...tional_Airport
Look the airlines that are AS ff partners.
Airlines/aircraft/routes with First class are decreasing. With some airlines business class (excluding f&b) is better than first class a decade ago.

The connecting flight in Asia will be business but TPAC can definitely be in F.

For a better indication of which airlines fly to which cities I would suggest flightconnections.com over Wikipedia. The free version is sufficient for that query. Note that Taipei has 2 airports.

And, OP, if you are interested, don't forget the free stopover! When I made this trip I flew JL F to HND, spent a week in Tokyo, and then flew JL J on to TPE, all for 70k miles (one way -- the return was through different cities and is no longer bookable with AS miles)

CX Awards do show up on AA, but it might not show up when there are AA's own flights.

Cathay – XXX-SFO/LAX-HKG-TPE. Only one connection if you're starting in LAX or SFO; otherwise, 2 connections. JL not ideal IMO.

Why is JL not ideal?

Obviously the determining factor is whether your can find availability. Also if you are planning on using the free stopover, the next question is whether you would rather visit Tokyo or Hong Kong (personally I like Tokyo a lot more)

And there are more gateways than just SFO and LAX. I had a very good business class fare JFK-TYO-TPE that was unfortunately cancelled due to covid (about $1800 rt booked through amex IAP, unfortunately scheduled for May 2020).

Stopovers are moot given HK quarantine and Japan entry currently limited to escorted “group” tours. I would not count on any stopovers planning for 2022 for HK, maybe for Japan depending on their group tour results (one of the first groups tested positive and they have elections next month). Also JL availability has been non-existent the last few weeks while searching 330 days out.

In the last two weeks I’ve booked 4 F/J awards to HND/TSA, they’re out there

If you’re looking on JAL, most of their flights are to Songhsan and not TPE

How far out was that? I have been looking for 2 one way SE Asia-JP-YVR for next May without any luck, only getting results on aa.com with Malaysian connecting to JL in Tokyo. Fine with just J, having done BKK-NRT-YVR last November on JL.

OP didn't say when he was traveling or which countries he was allowed to enter.

I expect this guided tour stuff to be over pretty quickly. Of course no one tested positive; they don't require tests on/after arrival if you are coming from a "blue" country.

There was an article a couple of weeks ago that said 1 of 4 people in one of the first tour groups tested positive, they were travel agents per the article.

Per Loyalty Lobby:

Excerpt from Kyodo News

A test tour for inbound travelers in Japan has been canceled after one of four Thais taking part tested positive for the coronavirus, Japan’s tourism agency has said.

The traveler was in the southwestern prefecture of Oita when his or her infection was confirmed Monday. The three other participants were deemed close contacts but have all tested negative. They are currently isolating at a hotel, the agency said. The route of infection is unknown.

The tourists arrived at Fukuoka airport via Tokyo’s Haneda airport on Friday. Their itinerary included Fukuoka’s Tenjin entertainment district as well as an onsen hot spring resort in Oita. The travel company responsible for the group is providing support.

Unless you would like a stopover in NA beforehand. LAX SFO, SEA, YVR, ORD, JFK.....

Of course, it conditions change, a stopover may be possible later & changes can be made. I would prefer JL simply because CX's woes are further reaching than COVID-19.

I would say an airline that continually cancels their schedule down to sub-daily frequencies like CX is not ideal, but I’m funny that way in that ideally, I would like to actually fly on dates I book if I book an award ticket.
