Is it possible to modify an existing award flight online to add a domestic segment?

I booked QF Premium Economy using AS miles from LAX to SYD, but I booked a separate paid cash flight (which is direct) on JetBlue from JFK to LAX and will have a 1 hour 50-min layover.

I’ve heard that JetBlue’s reliability has been less than stellar lately and it’s made me a little nervous about making the QF flight.

Is it possible to modify my award reservation from LAX to SYD online to also include a flight from New York to LAX without a change in the number of miles used? I saw that it’s possible but I somehow couldn’t make it work. Or would I have to call in?

AS has to have saver award space for the flight that you want. If they do then you should be able to do it as a change online. If you aren't seeing anything then they probably don't have saver space (no surprise there). If you have an EF subscription you can check there to be sure, or you can just call. But I would not be surprised if there's no saver space; AS has removed it from almost all routes.

I would allow much more than 2 hours if self-connecting on separate tickets at the start of your journey like that (if it was at the end, not so much). I would probably fly in the night before (which, of course, has additional costs) or have a backup flight on another airline (although, delays out of the same airport are certainly correlated)

As noted above, if you can't make it work, there probably isn't availability, which wouldn't be surprising.

But if there was, yes, you can change it from LA to NYC without a difference in miles. I'd hunt for any alternate routings out of other cities for the QF flight, like this one:

You’re right, the saver space for the date I wanted is gone, so I’m out of luck.

You do make a good point about possibly flying in the night before. Thanks a lot!

Ah thanks a lot! Was that routing done using multi-city? I’m currently flying and on my mobile phone, and it doesn’t seem like the mobile app or site has multi-city options.

Out of curiousity, I poked around and it appears the flights with 42.5k are available in September also...

Interesting enough you can from NYC-SYD on Fiji for 40k, or AS/QF/QF 42.5k (economy), 47.5k (premium), OR 55k for business. Personally if you have already paid 47.5k for premium economy... I would just fork over another 8k for business all the way since it would such long flights in E/E+. @Quarantine
