Canceled Christmas/New Year's Holiday Flights (2021)

I haven’t read much about it, but of course even AS canceled some.

“ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - Joining several other airlines across the country faced with difficulties brought on by the omicron variant, Alaska Airlines has canceled several flights as the holiday weekend draws near.

The airline said in a statement Friday that it had actually increased its number of employees for reserve positions in order to prepare for the holiday travel period. Some of those employees have since reported possibly being exposed to COVID-19, according to the statement, and are following the company’s quarantine protocols.

As a result, Alaska Airlines canceled 17 flights on Dec. 23 and nine on Christmas Eve.”

Except it is already quite outdated and doesn't include AS's weather meltdown in SEA the last two days.

Correct, it’s until mid-day 12/25. Not sure if Cranky didn’t have time to work that data into the story or if he wanted to keep the story focused on Omicron impact.

Anyone know if AS had a major issue at PDX, too?

Yes, it looks like the weather was a bigger factor for AS.

“But while the spike in coronavirus cases has left some airlines struggling to get planes into the air, Southwest Airlines and Alaska said the more familiar problem of winter weather was affecting their operations.
Alaska said a snowstorm in the Seattle area, where it is headquartered, led to almost 250 cancellations on Sunday and more on Monday.”

ANC was also shut down for a while. SEA is a sh*t show in general. 2 hours for deicing, no gates open, and not enough staff to handle all the planes, people, cargo, etc. So glad that $15/hr min wage has made things better!

SEA’s issues mostly stem from lack of space. Same problems as LaGuardia, Heathrow, etc.

BZE-LAX cancelled

Currently in Belize and got the notice today around 9AM our flight was cancelled, tried calling CS but call wasn't going through. CS called my wife sometime in the late afternoon but missed call .. called back and asked to be recalled when CS available nothing after several hours.... Called back se CS # and can't get through. Alaska is up there is terms of on my "do not fly list". ... Are we only entitled to the one-way fare return for the cancelation? Booked UA through IAH for a nice $2k upcharge to our trip .... I would have preferred Alaska rebook but can't get through to them and next flight on Thursday looks packed (have 4 people).

For weather related cancels, Alaska's only obligation is to refund your remaining oneway from BZE. They may offer some a customer service gesture for the poor handling, but won't pay for your UA tickets. May want to look into your travel insurance policy for trip delay and return flight coverage.

PDX-KOA cancelled last night. The equipment made it here, so I assume crew timed out. AS put us up for the night and rebooked for today. Looks like snow in PDX has resulted in proactive cancellation again this evening. Looking like we should be taken care of again on the accommodations but this time might be weather instead, so we shall see. Haven’t had the chance to personally experience the PNW meltdown like this as I usually avoid holiday travel. One reminder - no matter what Customer Care or Reservations say - go to the airport, they have all the tricks and tools there if you can do it.

Hard to imagine ANC is shut down…that must be very very bad.

That's all well and good if you've got the time, patience, and ability. The woman behind me in line @ SFO yesterday was already hours into awaiting a callback and an hour into waiting for an airport agent before she finally gave up.

Tricks and tools are only as good as the availability of the hooker or hardware store.

There were reports of freezing rain in some areas (more north of Anchorage) but I didn't see any news of a closure. Guessing ANC impact was short duration.
