Partner award change question
Im trying to book sea-sfo-bkk but it has a very long layover in sfo (10 hours!) and leaves at 6am (sad face). Would it be possible to book a separate second ticket (sea-sfo) and then try to use the paid-stand by feature (is it 24 hours ahead?) to leave at a better time but if that doesnt pan out then use the second ticket as the positioning flight? I would need to change the starting point to sfo in that case, would alaska allow that or is that considered a change? Sorry for the confusing post!

So you realize schedules for anything other than close in are pretty much notional or fictional, right?
If you’re trying to book fairly far out, wait for the inevitable schedule change and see if you can adjust then. Don’t buy tickets now.
SEA-SFO is likely going to have seats you can switch to day of flight. Note that without status you will be charged for same day change. Alaska does not allow standby for non-elites; it’s called “same day change”.

And yes, changing an award is… a change. Why wouldn’t it be considered a change when you are changing the award? So if you are purchasing the positioning flight and changing the award, yes, it’s a change (not a same day change, but you are changing the origin of your ticket).

And, can you change just the first domestic leg using same day standby on AS on an international itinerary with partner? Like sea-sfo is at 6pm but connects at 5pm, that means the day before (24hrs before) I can try to check in using the app and request a paid change to a later flight? Is that how it works?

Yes, you can do a same day CHANGE (again, it’s not standby, you actually change the flight, you aren’t on standby) on the Alaska segment. If the app or the website balks, give a call.

No.
https://www.alaskaair.com/content/tr...e/checked-bags
If you will be in the connecting city for 12 hours or longer, you will need to claim and re-check your baggage. Additional baggage fees may apply.

Travel that includes multiple flights
If your trip includes more than one flight on Alaska Airlines and/or one of our airline partners, we will check your bags to the final destination on your ticket as long as there are fewer than 12 hours between flights. If you will be in the connecting city for 12 hours or longer, you will need to claim and re-check your baggage. Additional baggage fees may apply.
