Alaska blocking QF awards?

Just checked via Qantas site and there is J availability on QF50 SFO-MEL for April 2, 2021. Doing the same search on Alaska site only shows Emirates flights connecting in DXB. Is Qantas blocking availability for partners or is Alaska doing something?

QF may be reserving some inventory for its own members

Yes, it does do this - quite openly.

AA is only showing PE availability on that flight as is AS. You need to go to AS' full site to see PE awards. Not only does QF restrict award availability to their own members (they announced they would increase premium award seats to QF members by 30% in June 2019) QF also uses married segments for award bookings too.

I have often found no J availability on LAX-SYD for a QF Member but J was available on the same segment if booked in conjunction with J SYD-HKG.

Iíve been at 75K since 2003, and I have never ever been able to find any availability to Australia on QF in premium cabins. I also am self employed, so I can literally leave any day of the week. Granted, I havenít searched on route outside the US, but they never release J or F space EX-USA. QF routinely lets J and F fly out empty without ever releasing ANY space, especially their high-end routes out of LAX.

I never really understood how this was fair, or was able to work out. How are their partners allowing them to get away with that? Especially when Qantas flyers are redeeming on their partners like AS, but itís not reciprocal for us!

QF F and J awards are extremely rare to find using AS miles, but they do happen... I have redeemed at least five within the past two years. Note that QF has pulled its A380 fleet out of service, so it may be a long time before they make available F awards when they aren't even selling F now.

For travel to Australia, you should consider Fiji Airways. The daily LAX flight is now operated by A350-900 in a fantastic Business Class configuration that I find to be a lot more comfortable than QF J. You can get to SYD via NAN and have a free stopover in Fiji which I highly recommend.

just curious what were the routes that you found? And what day and how far out? I have always searched and just gave up because itís never available on QF in J or F. Itís easier to find a CX F ticket.

CA to AU is very difficult even for QF FF members. I did find and booked DFW-SYD in F online in 2018, about 5 months out. The flight was in August, so during AU winter. I booked two awards SYD-BNE-LAX late last September. One was PE on March 3rd, the other, J on March 4th. Two days prior, a J seat opened up on March 4th. I changed to that flight so we were able to fly together on the same flight. I arrived in BNE from SYD about 90 minutes before my partner.

On February 3rd, I was returning to SIN on a paid PE fare. I was unable to transit HKG as it would have prevented boarding a cruise in NZ. I rebooked and then later cancelled the CX return and received a refund of the unused segments. I was prepared to fly QF in Y. There was no PE or J from LAX-SYD-AKL. However there was J available if starting in JFK on February 5th. AS even allowed for A space from LAX to JFK, which I flew redeye on the 4th, to fly QF back to LAX, switch aircraft, fly to Sydney, 2 day stopover and then onto Auckland, all for 55K miles

In my experience, 5 months out or within 48 hours was successful for a QF premium cabin award.

It will be interesting to see what oneworld will bring. As noted before, I used to see LAX-SYD in J availability when booked with SYD-HKG, which is a route that couldn't be booked in MP. Usually, any US-AU awards would be booked before the window of availability for AS awards would open.

QF F is out of the picture until at least 2023 with all 12 A380s vacationing in the Majove. Until then QF is at most a J airline. J on the A380 isn't too impressive; layout 1, is usually used on the route with a 2-2-2 J configuration.

MEL SFO & BNE LAX mostly but also LAX SYD... in the past, QF operated two A380 flights SYD LAX on some days of the week but now its A380 fleet is grounded. Usually I found availability 3-4 months before departure but it took me forever to search different routes.

You can only get First to HKG; CX hasn't offered F to Australia in years.

It could have to do with Qantas not expecting to be flying internationally before mid 2021 so likely is not allowing redemptions via any program.

I've done a couple Qantas flights with Alaska miles, including twice on the A380 in F which I've enjoyed (MEL-LAX and SYD-LAX). This past December I flew SFO-MEL-AKL in business (787-900 from SFO), spending time in Auckland, Taupo, Hamilton and Wellington. Could have done a free stopover in Melbourne but didn't have the time on this trip. Came home from that one in coach as I just could not find a business award seat. The year before I did stop in Melbourne for a few days on a business award to Perth (that free stopover is an excellent benefit as AA does not offer it on their awards).

My May, 2020, business award trip on Qantas disappeared due to coronavirus. It would have been SFO-MEL(stopover)-PER, with return BNE-MEL-SFO. Was originally booked in PE on the nonstop BNE-SFO but cancelled that when business opened up from MEL.

As to "when" I book, I start looking about 10-11 months out, or whenever the flights start appearing on line, as I'm typically going to OzFest and the dates are centered around the Memorial Day weekend. For trips outside that, I can start looking 3-4 months out (think that's what got me coming home from New Zealand in December in coach). My preference right now is to fly to Australia in Qantas business next year to get the free stopover in Melbourne again and head out to Perth.

I've set Expert Flyer alerts in the past, but I set up some test alerts with April, 2021, flights, where both AA and Alaska are showing flights in business, but I'm not getting EF alerts. Not sure what's going on there, so for now I just check every day as inventory is released on a rolling schedule. EF been pretty reliable in the past if you have a short range of dates and can flag every available flight. I've e-mailed them to see what's going on.

I have some Qantas photos in the "other airlines" and "2019 Auckland" galleries below.

Qantas opened up all sorts of U.S. award availability for May today, so I'm now booked to Australia for OzFest in business both ways with stopovers coming and going within Australia. Only hiccup I see might be the single A380 segment LAX-MEL - can move that to something else if those aircraft are not back in service (really don't expect them to be). Prior to today, they had only released business awards through April 23 and they seemed to be adding a new day as the calendar moved forward. This would be a good time to check inventory if you're looking. Have not looked to see how far out they've added seats - last day I checked was June 4 and there were seats there.

Good result, Just hope QF are flying long haul by then. Has been reported QF not expecting long haul until mid 2021, but nothing official

For members of the QF ffp has been reported the QF release award based on QF status. But I have not seen anything official. But I have booked awards more days out than has been reported for my (lowly) status.
For 06 Aug 2020 [AU time] that would be
QF Platinum---- OW Emerald-----353 days out so award flights to 25 Jul 2021
QF Gold----------- OW Sapphire----353 days out so award flights to 25 Jul 2021
QF Silver--------- OW Ruby---------- 323 days out so award flights to 25 Jun 2021
QF Bronze------- OW nothing----- 297 days out so award flights to 30 May 2021
