It's really the most simple thing:

1. Wearing a mask doesn't hurt anyone.
2. It potentially saves serious illness and death.
3. The less of #2 we have, the more likely it is that everything else gets back to normal sooner and if you don't like masks you won't be required to wear one anymore.

I would also encourage that if you see someone not wearing a mask and the crew will not enforce it, that you report the crew members with names and airlines to the FAA.

The FAA has nothing to do with this.

As of 2/2, when it became a violation of federal law.

You should report to DOT (the parent agency - online form) as well as to CDC. It goes without saying that a clear submission which includes a description of the FA as well as the date, flight number & city pair is essential.

Why did the flight depart when there were people on board refusing to wear a mask properly? Surely AS wants to know about this and would not just fob it off. At least one would like to think...that wasn't my experience before it became federal law however.

Just for the record, beyond issuing "the yellow card" and seeking compliance, the FA's hands are pretty tied once in the air. What they CAN do is alert management to take appropriate steps on the ground when you arrive and hopefully, be proactive in addressing issues on the ground before departure if they exist. What they can NOT do is force someone to do something they simply aren't going to do in the air. Unfortunately, your options are limited once you're in the air. Trying to use diplomacy and advising someone of the consequences of their actions once on the ground are pretty much the best you can do in the air. I've had some of the worst (and most volatile) experiences of my many years in the job over the last year - in particular, the last six months. Diplomacy and advising someone of the consequences of their actions is not very effective for everybody these days. The times have changed.

Can't the captain refuse to depart if passengers are already refusing to wear their masks per the mandates? I thought they could do that. Can a passenger ask to see the captain before take off and express their concern if the FA isn't proactively involving the captain? What are we supposed to do as passengers who are concerned about such things? Some ideas would be welcome!

I had a similar disintereseted crew when I complained about a passenger in 1DF needing a more appropriate mask, as his bandana mask was dropping virtually every 30 seconds. The crew did nothing, and these yapping F passenger with AS employee from Y continued. The F cabin male flight attendant had a name tag "Victoria". What was even more odd about the flight attendant (not F passenger or the AS employee from Y) is that he had the doors flaps to all of the galley bins (both bottom and the above bins) ALL WIDE OPEN during turbulance, and throughout most of the flight except take off and landing. These door kepts on closing and opening at the peak of turbulance but they did nothing. Nothing did drop from the bins but it might have had it gotten worses.

on the ground there are lots of options. I’m simply speaking about what options there are in the air.

Are you able to help us to know what the options are? What should a passenger do if there is an obvious problem before the doors close and the FA's seem disinterested? I'm not trying to be difficult but would like to know what my options are if I feel endangered by a pax refusing to wear a mask properly or at all. Thanks!

Absolutely raise it to a FA. If you don't want to raise it in front of the offender, head up to the galley and deal with it there. Make a point of saying that you feel unsafe and are concerned.

If they were anywhere close to me and the FA would not do anything, I would step off the plane. Better to catch the next flight than be infected. But, chances are that it doesn't get there because you will, by then have the Captain and gate agent involved.

I've seen pax offloaded from AS flights for being unwilling to wear a mask before leaving the gate. As soon as his foot was out the door they slammed the door and peeled out, to the extent that you can peel out in an ERJ-175.

I fly west coast to Hawaii a lot and I'm always pleased when we pass the halfway mark. Once the destination is closer if there is a problem they finish the trip. I've heard horror stories of planes turning around 2:45 minutes into a 6 hour flight due to some knucklehead who won't wear a mask, etc. I'd be all for FA's being armed with tranquilizer guns and with a majority vote of passengers they are allowed to use it..... in name of finishing the trip.

Last week, I was on a BNA-SEA flight in FC. A youngish (30's? early 40's?) couple was sitting across from me in FC.
The couple seemed to be having a good time - too good of a time. F-bombs flying around throughout the fight. The guy's first drink order was a white wine and red wine together, then he proceeded to slam the white wine while his GF videotaped him slamming the can.

The couple was having a hard time keeping their masks on, and received multiple warning from the FC FA.

Eventually, the FA handed them a yellow card. I guess that the guy still kept his mask down after the warning, because when I went up to the bathroom later on, the flight attendant apologized for their behavior (even though it was clearly not her fault), and old me that the could would NOT be continuing on their connecting flight to ANC. The FA did not mention any of this to the offending couple.

Sure as heck, when we got off the plane, a ground agent pulled them aside, and told them they're no longer allowed to fly AS - as long as AS had its mask policy in place. I did not stick around to see what happened next, though I did see a police officer escorting them out of N terminal.
Some people still don't get it...
