Change fee to upgrade to F

Just tried to switch my seats from main to F and the agent said there would be a $125 change fee to purchase the discounted F class. I don't fly as much as I used to, when did they start doing this? Seems ridiculous that someone can purchase F class tickets cheaper than I can pay for upgrading my current seats to F.

Saver fares mean no changes, for one thing. So... buy the second F ticket and throw away your Y ticket?

I ran into this trying to buy up to a cheap first class fare for myself and my son. Mine would have been just the fare difference (MVPG), but his would have a $125 change fee. These weren’t saver fares or even particularly cheap regular coach fares. So we’ll wait and hope the free upgrades clear. Not one of AS’s more sensible policies.

Mine weren't saver fares, they were main. It's a policy that doesn't make sense.

It seems that in the past, some agents have been willing to wave it. I agree it's not logical, but it's not unique to AS either.

I assume you aren't a 75K like your profile says? This charge would not apply if you were.

No I don't fly much anymore. Old profile. Haven't been on here much in the last year. The other people on my itinerary don't have status at all so they would have to pay the change fee.
