Is F full or empty?

I'm on AS2740 PAE-SJC this Saturday. Here's what I'm seeing:
F2 D2 P1 I1 U1 A0 Y7 Z7 S7 B7 M7 H7 Q7 L7 V7 K7 G6 T5 R3 X7 N0 W0 E0

Trying to book this flight, I can't book more than 2 seats in F, as expected. However, the seat map shows 11 of 12 seats empty. I doubt 9 others have already been upgraded but haven't selected seats, so what else could be going on here?

Why do you doubt that? I've found that seat selection after an upgrade is often times not automatic in many instances.

Might have been a temporary glitch. But I can book up to 7 seats on that flight. Looks like first 5 are at $315 each.

It's possible that people have been automatically upgraded without having seats selected. It's 2 days before, so all solo travelers should have been upgraded already (it's showing U1)

It's also possible that they are underselling F and overselling Y.

It's also possible that some people bought F tickets without selecting seats (this is unlikely on that route -- it's not uncommon coming from an international gateway when they might be connecting on another carrier, and have bought the ticket on the other carrier's website).

😂🤣😂

Sorry to say, that’s not how it works.

This is what ExpertFlyer shows under availability. 2 “F” seats Maximum for booking

Of those two:

2 are open as D
1 is open as P
1 is open as I
1 is open as U

other seats you see on their map are not yet assigned (even though booked). As many will say/remember/repeat: “The seat map is not a good indicator of true availability”.

Add to all of this what others are suggesting...some of those seats have been taken out of inventory pre-emptively (sp) based on who they plan to upgrade soon or hold for other reasons. Only the airline knows the exact answer to what’s going on with the seats vs fare codes.

AS holds back F inventory on flights with low F sales. I would guess there are more than 2 F seats available, and they will be released closer to departure.

You might want to get ready to move to SEA. PAE-SJC/SFO doesn't have a good track record lately.

PAE-SJC seems fine if there’s no snow. I’ll never do PAE-SFO again.

Ah, this seems to be the issue. Why would they do that?

So they can oversell economy without overselling the flight.

Because in general there is more demand for paid coach seats than paid F seats, and they'd rather (over)sell Y seats than go out with empty seats in F
