Wiki for using AS (Alaska) Miles on JL (Japan Airlines)

All awards for domestic Japan will default to Economy (including international F or J award with domestic segments).
However, these can often be upgraded at reasonable cost at the ticket counter in the Japan connecting airport

The simple answer is no, Alaska does not not get all of JL's premium availability. IOW, they do have access to it but they hide it sometimes and make it difficult or impossible to book. I am pretty sure you are searching for flights within the first 5-6 days of schedule open, right? This is where you will see issues like you desribe. Outside that limited window AS mostly has access to everything AA does with the caveat that schedule caching may temporarily block it.

Within the first 5 days of schedule open you can try using the calendar trick which sometimes show more options. For example, NYC-TYO on 12/9 shows only economy with a regular search. Using the calendar trick Business and First also show.
Maybe this needs to be in the wiki, with a description/illustration of the calendar trick?

I guess it depends on the route. I'm seeing tons of NRT-ORD space within the first 2 weeks, that seems to be when they open the F awards up. I have J right now booked for Feb, hoping F opens up on the same day or near it.

Thanks skimthetrees , that's super helpful! Yes, looking within the first few days of AS's booking window, and that's where I see the largest mismatch on availability.

You're right that the availability will show on the calendar, but if you try to move forward ("continue"), the flight still won't populate. In practice, should agents still be able to see that on the phone? I asked one agent and got a simple "our award shop looks just like yours for JAL"

Upgrade AS award with JL miles?

I booked two seats in Y for NYC > HND in April. Am I able to upgrade these seats using JL miles or would I have to use AS miles, subject to space that shows up via AS?

I believe you have to use AS miles and pay a $125 change fee

While this would be good to get the word out I am not sure whether putting the word out is a good idea. I get the feeling AS is intentionally hiding this availability and publicizing it more will make it more likely they spend the effort to shut down the workarounds. Today when I checked the calendar view one extra day was unhidden but others were still blocked. This is worse than I have seen in the past and I don't think it is accidental. There is another workaround described in the 2019 thread. People who are interested can search for it there. I am going to refrain from mentioning it unless someone else brings it up.

Understand. The challenge here is that the workaround doesn't seem to work (at least on these dates, maybe because they're the last few days of the window). Even starting from the beginning, it could show, but on the second step, nothing.

Check the 2019 thread. There may be a way to accomplish what you want. Sent you a PM.

From the US it still looks to be on the charts but the website errors out when searching for flights. I see two possibilities:

1) It is a true website bug in which case it will be fixed when someone in AS IT gets tasked to fixed it. Possibly reporting the bug to the right contact in AS would help?

2) It's a feature and AS does not want to allow these awards going forward. Then it will never be offered and the best we can hope for is for AS to update their award charts to reflect the loss.

I booked an award on JL flights online with a domestic connection. I called to change the time of the domestic connection. I have done that successfully before but this time, the agent said she was getting an error message when trying to ticket the new itinerary and that she would send it to the ticketing desk. It sounds like that could take some time from what she said (she said up to 7 days initially then said that since the flight was in two weeks, it probably would be done before that).
I went through the 2019 and before thread and saw someone having a ticketing time issue but that person never came back to say what the result was.
Should I worry with AS ticketing system?

Typical issue is usually getting the award space. Have you confirmed you see the domestic award space on Alaska website?

Yes and they did grab it. So I have a booking with my updated domestic JL flight, transpac JL flight and AS flights at the end. It is the re-ticketing that was giving the agent an error.

Does the new flight show up online when you pull up your itinerary? I would give it 2-3 days and then call back if not ticketed, mentioning that your flight is coming up soon.

Though the agent on the phone had said it should take several day, I received an email this morning and it has been re-ticketed. No problem. I was just a bit cautious given past experiences with AA and BD (RIP ).
