Why Doesn't AS Have Lie-Flat Seats on Transcons?

Really? Big disincentive to fly AS!

They've made it crystal clear their intention is not to target earning revenue in FC as a strategy. Rather they see FC and upgrades as a retention strategy. Yes it sucks, but thats their approach.

No need to rehash this. Feel free to read through these closed threads:

[Rant] AS First Class Is a Bad Joke

Mea culpa: I just paid full F fare for JFK-SFO on Alaska

Really? They don't upgrade much in advance anymore.

I thought it was just because they decided it isn't worth upgrading, and they still get some suckers who pay for first trans-con

Considering how are are upgrades are on Transcons flights, they clearly are selling F. Why not everyone will shell out extra bucks for lie flats is probably due to many people just not seeing the extra cost is worth it over a perfectly comfortable seat.

Alaska has a monopoly on some non-stop routes for their F product. Though I think United is now flying premium economy, similar to Alaska F, on some of their lie-flat routes.

It's not their style. And who needs to lay down on a transcon?

I can think of a number of reasons:
  1. Interoperability-- With its current setup AS can easily swap aircraft between short and long flights
  2. Monopoly on certain routes
  3. Competition's offerings-- United and AA rarely offer lie flat out of SEA or PDX

No market in the AS demographic. You could ask the same thing about the AS lounge and the AS food in F.

Bear in mind that while AA, DL, UA and B6, all offer a premium TCON product with lie flat seating, even that is limited to certain routes which are HVC-heavy. AS, after all, did not bump its F product up when it acquired VX.

That is a tough one! So many, decades past the age of Majority, still act like them....
