EL AL (LY) Announced as AS Partner (5/13/2019)

Just discovered El Al will be added as a partner this summer (July 2019) per Alaska earning charts. Didn't see that coming but a welcome development!

Wasn't expecting that. Glad to see AS expanding its portfolio of partners.

So this was brought up last year when LY started their expansion into more AS markets, but how will this fare with EK from a geo-political standpoint, if at all?

Very happy with this addition, as with AA pulling out of TLV and BA surcharges, LY new longhaul interiors are not a bad way to go direct. Issue is Matmid has always been a horrid program and wonder what type of awards/prices we'll see now.

So have to ask, does this go the way of SQ and we have to wait until 2023 to get award redemptions? They have the earning chart already up, but of course "Award redemption isn’t available at this time, but will be at a later date."

Wow! I previously had LY as one of the least-likely airlines to partner with AS, but this is welcome nonetheless.

Looks like current LY destinations that can connect to AS:
BOS, ORD, JFK, SFO (May 13), LAX, LAS (June 14), MCO (July 2), EWR.

Maybe only LAX and SFO are useful to them though.

Yeah - seems like someone jumped the gun a little bit putting that up there. Which makes sense why there wasn't a bigger announcement.

Moe, Larry and Curly.

As usual, I'm sure it's just a coincidence that their articles appeared after the info was posted on FT.

ORD only starts on March 20, 2020, and MCO is summer seasonal. LY also flies to MIA, which AS does not serve.
This partnership will bring the most value to those going from Israel to the west coast, and vice versa...

Given LY's route network I still don't understand why their partnership with AA isn't being renewed, but still this is great news.

It seems like MIA-FLL should be a reasonable airport change for a connection. Google maps says it's only a 37-minute drive.
