What's Going On at SFO Gate 54? (Press Event Introducing New Cabin Experience)

Looks like they've changed the gate into a room for a "private event". Might be something to do with a new menu from what I can see inside.

its a media thing for the new interior on a Airbus

New Airbus interior? Isn't there like one of those in fleet right now?

u2g0d Feb 27, 2019 9:14 am

They changed the interiors of the former Virgin Airbus' to have AS-branded colors (blue/green instead of red).
Quote from another article:

The 12-year-old A320, registered N628VA, is the first of 73 Airbus aircraft to be retrofitted, with 12 seats in first class, 24 seats in Premium Class and 114 in the main cabin — from 8, 18 and 129, respectively. It’s operating mostly short-haul flights, but has already made appearances on several transcontinental routes as well.
As expected, mood lighting is now set to a fluorescent blue and seatback entertainment screens were replaced by personal device streaming. Standard coach seats lost an inch of pitch, though that shouldn’t be too noticeable as the new slimline seats provide more legroom at knee level. The biggest difference with these seats is their padding.

That doesn't sound right - I thought all the VX A320s had 3 FAs, so no more than 150 seats. Or am I mistaken?

You are correct, the majority of the A320s had 149 seats in the VX configuration (8 F, 12 Y+, 129 Y), while newer VX A320s with sharklets have 3 fewer Y seats due to more aft galley space. Also, I think the article is wrong about the seat pitch going down in Y, at least on the A320. Cutting the 55” pitch in F to 40” and replacing the hard bulkhead with soft bulkhead enabled installing the extra row of F and premium class.

Media event for the new interior on the A321. Had product reps (Gogo, Recaro, Sky Chefs, etc), media, and AS execs on a flight to show it off. Sky chefs catered the event

Melinda Danielsen, who many of you may know as she lives here in Northern CA, has a great write-up on the event, including lots of photos:

Alaska Airlines invited me to San Francisco yesterday for a look at their redesigned in-flight experience, including a charter flight on their first retrofitted Airbus A321 (registration N928VA). For those unaware, Alaska is historically an all-Boeing company but inherited an Airbus fleet with the acquisition of Virgin America. Those planes have fewer (but larger) first-class seats as well as built-in entertainment systems in the main cabin. They’re now retrofitting the Virgin America fleet for brand consistency across all their aircraft.

Kind of surprising they’d go to 12 F seats in the A321 (according to that article) when they have 16 in the 739.

tom911 Feb 28, 2019 10:23 am

Interesting that an Alaska rep says the 12 seat configuration should provide a 75% upgrade rate to Gold and 75K flyers- wonder how those numbers change when you look at the individual elite group versus bundling them in. Surely 75K numbers would increase some but maybe they don't want to share that number.

Long term, though, I think all elites will enhance their upgrade numbers when you're on aircraft with 12 or 16 seats compared to 8, so I'm willing to give up that comfy Airbus F seat for better clearance odds down the line.

Sloppy reporting? You can see footrests behind the third row of F in the "First Class Seats" picture. Unless Row 6 gets them, that's for the fourth row of F.

The Alaska Fleet page still shows 16F in the reconfigured A321 (12F in A319/320).

Yeah that's what I'd suspected. Good observation.

Alaska plans to convert four planes to the new interiors each month beginning in March, said president and CEO Ben Minicucci, bringing 85 percent of its 71 ex-Virgin Airbuses and 36 percent of the airline’s total fleet to the updated seating by early 2020.
