USA-HKG Stopover DXB-NYC Strategy and Redemption

Hi All:

I am looking at a Round The World family vacation.

We would like to fly from the US to HKG spend a few days there, then fly to DXB spend a few days there then go to the US.

Should I try to use AS Miles on Cathay on the US-HKG and then HKG-DXB or us AS Miles on EK from HKG-DXB-USA.

I'd like to try to do this in December, year TBD.

Thanks for any help you can offer on getting maximum use of miles and selecting US gateway cities that are good for redemptions

US-HKG-DXB 1 award on CX followed by DXB-US on 1 award EK will be fewer points.

Hi -

What class of service are you looking for? How many tickets? What status do you have on AS?

My first pass would be to use CX for USA-HKG (stopover) - DXB. If you go early in December, you should be able to find seats in Premium Economy from JFK/EWR/BOS/ORD. You will need to buy a positioning flight.

From DXB, your choices either have a large mileage cost or high fuel surcharges (See BA). My recommendation wold be for you to get another positioning flight fro DXB-Europe to connect to an AA gateway city. There, off-peak Economy back to PIT will cost 22,500/passenger. As an AA EXP, you should be able to book MCE for free. And you can pick up any one of interesting European cities to explore.

Thanks everyone. This really helps. I have no AS status and am trying to do business class wherever possible. The AS Award on CX seems like a good value

Hi -

Yes, the CX awards can be good value, but you are facing several hurdles:

1) No status means you pay a change fee every time you change your ticket. Having MVPG status exempts you from change fees. Not an issue, except ...

2) If you are a family of 4, you are not likely to find 4 F/J seats on one flight until they open up the cabin around 7-14 days before departure.

3) They usually open up 1F / 2J / 4PE at the booking window. And this would be manageable, except ...

4) The AS window for awards opens well after the window opens for BA/QF/AA. That means you get the leftovers.

So, to sum up: if you are using AS miles with no status, plan on 2J + 2PE, unless you are willing to pay a lot in change fees. You might consider expanding your departure dates to include November 15-December 7. Thanksgiving is usually a slow time for TPAC/TATL travel.

Two other options to consider:

1) Buy AA miles. Right now you can get 270,000 for about 4K. Not sure about AA stopover rules, but it might be helpful

2) Explore the Premium Fares thread here on FT. You might find a good one-way fare from Europe-US that you could utilize. For example, something like this: TP : Various flights ex-Europe to USA from 1,100 EUR in J or 600 EUR OW
