1/19/19 LAX-GDL AS 290 MVP Upgrade cleared at T-48 hours

After a year with no status, I requalified on my last flight of the year. This is my first upgrade; when I was an MVP two years ago, I didn't get any after March of that year. My understanding is this flight is usually an easy upgrade. I'll take it.

(The most epic failure I have ever experienced on AS)
Date: Jan 20, 2019
Route: SEA-ANC
Flight Number: 119
Status: MVP
Gold75K
Fare Class: R
Purchased 9/10/18
1 on the waitlist of 28

This flight had been showing 9 open seats for weeks. As of this morning there were still 9 seats available out of 16 according to Expert Flyer. 50 minutes prior to the flight there were still nine seats available. I was number 1 on the waitlist when I decided to use the restroom before the flight. When I came back to the Boarding area I saw that two people had been upgraded and were now above me on the list according to the AS screen. I was still # 1 for the remaining UG's. That was a ... moment, but I wrote it off. After boarding and taking seat 8D, the gate agent came onboard and upgraded 6 more people, not including me. This did not go over well, but WTH, things happen. I was very upset and getting madder by the second. A while later a pax came and told me that I was in her seat. She went to the F flight attendant who (finally) came and moved me to 4D. This is a very frustrating way to treat your most loyal passengers and showed extreme confusion by the gate staff.

Two people were upgraded just prior to boarding and 7 more after we had all taken their seats.

AS really, really needs to get their act together and do better than this.

Service on the flight was minimal and the F attendant spent most of her time eating her lunch or talking to the other flight attendants or the pilots.

12/16 (Two after me on the list cleared into premium though?)
A month or two ago.

I don't mind missing this since I'm in the emergency row anyway. I didn't bother posting my SEA-SAN flight since I was in lowly X.

F cleared at T-120. This must be the first time I was upgraded this early on this route since 2017. Free upgrades are hard to come by on the SEA to HNL route starting a year and a half ago, and I fly this route regularly (say once every 2 months) since 2017. A pleasant surprise. However, I will probably stuck in PE on my return trip because F was already sold out on that flight.

Upgrade came through approximately 48 hours prior to departure. Glad to see upgrades clearing more than 2 hours in advance on ex-Virgin aircraft. 3 others cleared into F at the gate.
Date Purchased: Late December 2018

If I were #1 and suddenly saw others cleared ahead of me on the list, I would have immediately tracked down the gate agent. Why board and risk being skipped (again) as opposed to getting the issue sorted out up front? I'd be much more concerned about sitting in F than getting overhead space. Being proactive is key when things don't seem to be working properly, particularly with AS, as they often seem to acknowledge mistakes and try to correct them. Clearly, things didn't work as they should have here, but it seems a brief conversation prior to boarding could have saved you a significant amount of stress.

Surprising F availability for SEA-ANC, btw.

Usually fly AS for my SFO <> BNA flight, but flew United this time as the ticket price was $700 RT.

As a Premier Gold
SFO -> BNA - cleared F
BNA -> SFO - #21 on upgrade list, ended up sitting in row 32

Not worth the additional ~1k miles
on AS, my upgrade to F has been 90%
